PORTFOLIO Accents Speakerseries It’s no stretch to say that this military town is also a college town. Home to Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville Technical Community College and Methodist University, Fayetteville is a short drive from another college, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. But even if you aren’t a student, the schools offer something for everyone. Broaden your mind without emptying your wallet by checking out the top-notch speakers these schools bring every year. Here’s a sampling: Distinguished Speaker Series UNCP www.uncp.edu 910.521.6482 Sept. 15, 2010: Erin Gruwell Gruwell went from teaching high school students to the silver screen. Her story is the basis for the feature film “Freedom Writers.” Nov. 29, 2010: Adam Beach The actor is also a member of the Ojibwa Nation. Known for his work in such movies as “Flags of Our Fathers,” “Windtalkers” and “Smoke Signals,” he can be seen on the most recent season of the television series “Big Love” on HBO. Feb. 21, 2011: Judy Shepard She is perhaps best known for being the mother of Matthew Shepard whose life and death are the basis for the play and critically-acclaimed movie, “The Laramie Project.” The play has been performed across the country in an effort to bring an end to hate crimes. April 26, 2011: Hill Harper You may recognize him as one of the stars of “CSI: NY” but Harper is also a Harvard graduate and author who recently completed his second book in a series called “Letter to a Young Sister.” Distinguished Speaker Series FSU www.uncfsu.edu 910.672.1111 Oct. 7, 2010: Dr. Alvin Poussaint Poussaint is an expert on race relations in America in addition to serving as a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. The author of two books and dozens of articles, Poussaint received a New England Emmy award. Feb. 3, 2011: Judith Jamison The artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is a highly- regarded dancer, choreographer, artist and author. Her new work, “Private Spaces: Public Places,” premieres this season.
