The Naval Academy-bound track star defended her 100-meter dash title and helped Red Bluff High's 4x400-meter relay team to its second win in as many years at West Valley High School. "I knew today was going to be a good day for me," Brose said. "Whatever happened, win or lose, I knew I was going to give it my all and have no regrets, so I was pretty satisfied." Brose's and Foothill High's Hailey Jackson's photo finish in the 100 could hardly be closer. Both notched times of 12.48 seconds. Brose came out ahead. And in the 4x400, Brose, her sister, Daisy, Kaylynn Gibson and Adrienne Hinkston set a stadium record with their 3:58.42 time. "Our team has been working hard all season, every day at practice," Hinkston said, "so just to finally be able to accomplish this is awesome." Hinkston anchored the 4x400 squad, and earlier in the day captured secondplace honors in the 400-meter dash (58.18), making it the second year in a row after she won the event in 2011. Though Hinkston was a critical cog in the Spartans' effort to win the 4x400 relay, she said she wasn't having the best day individually. "I wasn't really feeling it, I guess you could say," she said. "But I think just being with my teammates, they really helped pick up my mood and got me pumped for the race." Brose finished second in the 200-meter dash (25.49) and she, Joanna Smith-Conrad, Gibson and Hinkston took second in the 4x100-meter relay (50.17). On the boys' side, the Spartans last year were left with a bitter taste in their mouth after coming into the 4x400-meter relay as the top-seeded team only to finish, disappointingly, in third. Red Bluff sought redemption on Friday. The Spartans' quartet of Sean Freeny, Stephen Hackstaff, Austin Torres and anchor Michael Stone in the event ran a 3:23.67, which was more than a second ahead of Pleasant Valley. Stone said last year's defeat was on the team's mind. "(It) was like a chip on our shoulders," Stone said, "because PV had the same exact team that beat us last year, so we knew that throughout the season and that drove us to work harder in practice." He added, "I was just glad (they watched) us get first." It was the second win of the day for the boys in relay, and the second win where the Spartans edged the Vikings. A team of Torres, Hackstaff, Stone and Dylan Schaible finished the 4x400 in 43.67 seconds, which bested Pleasant Valley by .06 seconds. A first-place finish at the meet Friday earned individuals and teams a ticket to the CIF State Track and Field Championships, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis. Stone and Torres said Friday was a night they'll look fondly on. "For a lifetime," Stone said. Torres also finished third in high jump, with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches. The winning mark was 6 feet, 6 inches. See FINALS, page 2B
