Rangers 4 Spartans, Cards eye the finish line Boston leads series 3-1 Western Conference Semifinals Chicago 0 Detroit 2 Detroit leads series 3-1 Today's games TRACK & FIELD Northern Section Championships at West Valley Field events: 4 p.m. Running events: 6 p.m. At the Northern Section CIF Track and Field Finals, themes of defense and redemption have emerged. Red Bluff and Corning high school athletes will descend on West Valley High School today at 4 p.m. for the section's athletic event. For Red Bluff, there's senior star Lily Brose, whose performance in last year's event garnered her the coveted Bob Russell Award for most outstanding athlete. Brose, who today is scheduled to participate in the girls 4x100- and 4x400 meter relays and the 100- and 200-meter dashes, will defend her wins in the 100- and 200meter dashes and 4x400-meter relay. And that 4x400 team is back in full, as Brose, Adrienne Hinkston, Allison Winning and Joanna Smith-Conrad return as the top qualifiers. Hinkston, after winning the 400-meter dash in 2011, fell in the event last year. She's scheduled for a third go-round today and comes in with an inside lane. Hinkston will also join Brose in the 200meter dash, and they'll have Tehama County competition near the outside in the Cards' Jessica Beckley. The Lady Spartans round out their trackevent itinerary as the top seed in the 4x100meter relay, which is composed of SmithConrad, Brose, Kaylynn Gibson and Hinkston. Kayla Thayer, Red Bluff High's discuss and shot put star, has a chance to redeem her fifth-place finish in shot put last year. But she'll have familiar company in Corning High's Morgan Parker, who last year finished fourth in the event. The field-event duo also will share space in the discuss event, which has Parker at the top of the eight-girl field, and Thayer seeded fifth. On the boys side, a top-seeded team of Dylan Schaible, Michael Stone, Austin Torres and Stephen Hackstaff will try to do in the 4x400-meter relay what the Spartans' topseeded team in the event last year couldn't — win. That crew also has a shot in the 4x100- See FINALS, page 2B Red Bluff MERCY HIGH SCHOOL STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS Corning Follow @TehamaSports on Twitter for live event coverage Detroit takes 3-1 lead over Chicago NBA PLAYOFFS Eastern Conference Semifinals Indiana TNT Miami 5:30 p.m. Miami leads series 1-0 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS Eastern Conference Semifinals Ottawa NBCS Pittsburgh 4:30 p.m. Pittsburgh leads series 3-1 MLB Athletics CSNC Houston 5:10 p.m. OAK — Milone HOU — Bedard Colorado Giants 7:15 p.m. COL — Chatwood SF — Lincecum On the tube AUTO RACING 8 a.m. NBCSN — IRL, IndyCar, Indianapolis 500 Carb Day, part I 9 a.m. NBCSN — IRL, Indy Lights, Freedom 100, at Indianapolis 10 a.m. NBCSN — IRL, IndyCar, Indianapolis 500 Carb Day, part II BOXING 7 p.m. ESPN2 — Junior middleweights, Delvin Rodriguez (27-63) vs. Freddy Hernandez (30-4-0), at Uncasville, Conn. DETROIT (AP) — Jimmy Howard kept Jonathan Toews in his misery, making three saves against the struggling star to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-0 on Thursday night in Game 4 of the second round series to put the NHL's best team during the regular season on the brink of elimination. When Howard wasn't using his glove or pads to deny Toews, Detroit's skaters were rattling him and his teammates with a physical presence that is clearly making them uncomfortable. ''They are getting frustrated,'' Howard said. ''Our guys are doing a great job in front of the net.'' Chicago's Corey Crawford did a solid job in his net, but he couldn't kick his right leg out quick enough to stop Jakub Kindl's shot on a power play midway through the second period and he was on the bench in favor of an extra skater when Daniel Cleary sealed the victory in the final minute. After losing Game 1, seventh-seeded Detroit has surged into control by handing the Blackhawks their first three-game losing streak of the year. Game 5 is Saturday night in Chicago. ''The pressure is on them,'' Detroit defenseman Jonathan Ericsson said. Yes, it is. And, no one in the Windy City will want to extend the series more than Toews. ''We've got to find a way to force a Game 6,'' he said. The Blackhawks desperately need their captain to score and lead after he See LEAD, page 2B STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS Kreider keeps Rangers alive with OT goal; NY trails 3-1 NEW YORK (AP) — Chris Kreider proudly wore the Broadway Hat in the victorious New York Rangers dressing room as he tried to describe the feeling of saving his team's season. Kreider deftly steered in a pass from Rick Nash 7:03 into overtime, and the Rangers stayed alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. ''It is so surreal,'' the 22-yearold Kreider said. ''It's not something that can really be explained. It is something that just has to be felt, but it was awesome. I'm just excited to give these guys an opportunity to play another game. ''There is no quit in this room.'' New York, which erased 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, still trails the Eastern Conference semifinal series 3-1. The Rangers will need to win again on Saturday in Boston to force a Game 6 back in Madison Square Garden. The Rangers, who were out- shot 40-32, won a faceoff deep in their zone, and Nash rushed the puck up ice. He stopped above the right circle and fed a hard pass in front that Kreider skated into and tipped past goalie Tuukka Rask for his first of the playoffs. New York, 0-3 in overtime in these playoffs, was eliminated from the conference finals last year by New Jersey in extra time in Game 6. ''It is time for us to win an overtime game,'' Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. ''This was a big one. It was such a great feeling to see that puck go in.'' Kreider, who made his NHL debut in last year's playoffs, has six career postseason goals in just 25 games. ''I was lucky enough to play with Rick,'' Kreider said. ''Just trying to go hard to the net. He's such a talented player. He was able to find my tape, and I tried to put it on net.'' Derek Stepan and Brian Boyle scored tying goals in the third See ALIVE, page 2B
