4A Daily News – Friday, May 24, 2013 Education in Tehama County Elks honor students of the month KEEP ON LEARNING Nicholson graduates from Oregon State University CORVALLIS, Ore. – An estimated 5,267 students will receive degrees this spring from Oregon State University, which will hold its 144th annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 15, at Reser Stadium on campus. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. Emily Nicholson, of Cottonwood, Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, Education, Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, Zoology is among the graduates. Bentz, who advises President Obama on national security issues. She is director of strategic capabilities policy on the National Security Staff and a 1986 graduate of OSU, where she received an ROTC commission and a degree in radiological health. Bentz is the first female officer from the Oregon Army National Guard to achieve the rank of general. This is the largest class to graduate from Oregon State University, which has seen record enrollments for several years. Green receives degree from University of Portland Kylee Green, of Red Bluff, graduated from University of Portland with a bachelor's in nursing. University president, Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C., conferred 744 bachelor's and 160 master's degrees during commencement exercises held Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5 in the Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus. The University of Portland is Oregon's Catholic university and has been closely affiliated for nearly a century with the Congregation of Holy Cross, Notre Dame, Ind. It is the only school in Oregon to offer a College of Arts & Sciences, a graduate School and nationally accredited schools of business, education, engineering and nursing. The Democratic governor grilled UC Provost Aimee Dorr about the university system's graduation rates during a Tuesday meeting of the Board of Regents. Dorr said overall rates and the number of years it takes to get a degree at the 10 UC campuses generally have improved over the past two decades, but those numbers vary by campus. Officials said various factors affect graduation rates, including a student's financial aid status, major and family education history. Brown has pushed to make the state's higher education systems more efficient and to lower the cost of attendance.
