22 www.DesertMessenger.com December 16, 2020 Dolly Parton said it best... By Jackie Deal Dolly Parton said it best. In an interview with Oprah, Dolly re- marked…well, let's leave that for now; we'll get back to Dolly later. Are you interested in living about seven years longer than your peers? If not, go watch TV. But it you're interested: a study that investigated perceptions about aging and sur- vival over a 22-year period among 660 men and women in Ohio, age 50 to 94 found: "Self-perceptions of aging had a greater impact on survival, than did socioeconomic status, loneliness and functional health." In fact, positive attitudes had a greater effect than lowered blood pressure or cholesterol, or exercise, weight loss, or non-smok- ing. Lowering blood pressure or cholesterol is supposed to increase your life span by an estimated four years. Exercise, weight loss, or non-smoking may add one to three years to your life span. This study found that adults with a positive attitude about aging lived more than seven years longer than peers with a negative attitude. The study was done at Yale University and published in the" Journal of Personality and Social Psychology." Further research from Trinity Col- lege in Dublin, Ireland studied 4,135 men and women on a longi- tudinal study and concluded: "The way we think about, talk about and write about aging may have direct effects on health. Everyone will grow older and if negative attitudes towards aging are carried through- out life they can have a detrimental, measurable effect on mental, physi- cal and cognitive health." Berthe in the Broadway play, "Pip- pen" sings: "Here is a secret I never have told. Maybe you'll understand why. I believe if I refuse to grow old, I can stay young till I die." It's up to you: you can think of growing older as totally negative or you can focus on the blessings and benefi ts. It's your choice. Now what about Dolly Parton? When asked how she feels about turning 75, Dolly replied, "I don't think about my life in terms of num- bers," going on to add that "I will be the best I can be at whatever age. I ain't got time to get old." Her fi nal parting thought: "You gotta shine from within. Sometimes, that can make you feel young and make you seem young to other people." So folks, in this dreary, dark time let's think positive and shine with Dolly Parton. QIA Quartzsite Improvement Assoc.
