Saturday, July 10, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Religion Faith&Worship Church news Southern gospel concert at First Church of God The Beene Family, one of America’s favorite gospel families, will be in concert at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21 at First Church of God, 1005 S. Jackson St., in Red Bluff. The concert will feature Ryan Seaton, former lead singer of Ernie Haase and Signature Sound with opener Solid Ground. This will be an action-packed concert event and everyone is welcome. The Beene Family is recognized as one of the most exciting families on the road today in gospel music. Their concerts are full of energy and profes- sionalism and yet their tenderness and discernment for ministry comes from their walk with the Lord. Seaton has now launched his solo career and Solid Ground is a male gospel trio. New Hope Foursquare Church hosts movie event New Hope Foursquare Church will present “The Prodigal,” a 1983 film release from World Wide Pictures of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Associa- tion at 7:10 p.m. today. The film first played at State Theatre on Oak Street and was held over for several weeks. New Hope is excited to bring the award-winning film back to the big screen in Red Bluff after more than 25 years. Admission is free. New Hope Foursquare Church is at 925 Walnut St. For more information, call 528-0642 or 527- 0947. Local author to speak at church without walls Local author Doug Shepard will be speaking at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at the Red Bluff River Park. Shepard will be sharing his personal testimony chronicled in his recently published book, “Victim of Pleasure.” Formerly an agnostic, Shepard found the strength to overcome alcoholism, drug addiction and suicidal thoughts by pursuing a relationship with God. He was a success in the adult entertain- ment industry, but profoundly unhappy and dissat- isfied with his life. Shepard’s transparency and willingness to share his life’s story promises to be a time of encourage- ment and a testament to the victory of living a life for Christ instead of for self. The Church Without Walls is a non-denomina- tional outreach that ministers to anyone at the Red Bluff River Park and encourages people of diverse backgrounds to share their testimonies in order to bring hope and forgiveness to people who are expe- riencing the same difficulties. Food will be served and the event will conclude with a book signing. All are welcome to this free event. Please bring chairs or a blanket as seating is limited. I really dislike these kinds of questions because I believe they are fundamen- tally wrong. The people asking are seeking the wrong things altogether. Life as a believer in Christ is not lived in the "what can I get away with mode." It is not lived by determining how little you can do for God or how much time you "must" spend at church or doing Christian things. When I hear people phrasing ques- tions like these I know that they are having a crisis of faithful living and are facing trouble if they are not redi- rected into something better. What do I mean? I mean that the Christian life is not about living in the negative but about living in the posi- tive. We should not be asking what we can or can not do but how we can please God. When we ask the ques- tions in this way it eliminates most of our former questions and we have great joy too. I’m asked if it is okay for a person to do a certain thing. I ask a few questions. Would they see Jesus doing what they are asking to do themselves and would what they were considering doing bring praise to God. If not, they already have their answer. I believe that the Apostle Paul was telling people this in 1Cor. 10:31-33 GNB. He writes, "Well, whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it all for God's glory. (32) Live in such a way as to cause no trouble either to Jews or Gentiles or to the church of God. (33) Just do as I do; I try to please everyone in all that I do, not thinking of my own good, but of the good of all, so that they might be saved." What Paul is saying seems to be that those of us who have a witness for Jesus Christ should choose to live our lives in such a way that we don’t injure others by our liberty. We have all the freedom in the world to do things as we like but we should so love Christ and those He places before us, to reach for Him, that we willingly put aside our personal freedom for their benefit. If I teach seekers or new Dan believers that in the world there are white, black and gray areas but that for the sake of Christ believers choose to stay as far away from the gray areas as possible, I am giving them a tool to live for God successfully from now on. The gray areas of life always lead us into temptation and flirtation with things that we ought not do either for our own good or for that of those we influence. Try this simple tool. If a new Christian sees me doing such and such will his or her faith be affected negatively? If it will, don’t do it. Would I be able to invite Jesus to par- Steigman GodTalk ticipate in this thing I am doing? If you wouldn’t, don’t do it. I may be wrong but it seems to me the gray areas of life are always the selfish ones. They are the things that are for our flesh, our self-righteousness, our authority or power. Gray areas are like gateway drugs. Once you start down the path of making excuses to do things that you know would not be as uplifting to Jesus Christ as they could be it takes very little time to do more and more of them. Soon you have forgotten your Christian witness and all that is left behind is the meeting of your personal desires. Though there may be nothing wrong with get- ting a few of the things you want it can become a stumbling block for others. Paul says souls are worth a lot more than a prime steak. Although the steak is great it is nothing com- pared to eternity with a new brother or sister in Christ. Dan Steigman pastors the Believers' Church of God in Corning. His passion is that believers not content themselves with meeting Christ, but that we actually engage and walk with Him through the life He has won for us Courtesy photo Alexa De La Rosa presents Brett Jones of Hands of Hope Rescue Mission with a check for $164.
