If not, a star-packed new special details the history of one of the sea- son's most famous songs through music and dra- matic segments. Airing on The CW on Thursday, Dec. 10, "Si- lent Night: — A Song for the World" unites many talents, with Hugh Bonne- ville ("Downton Abbey") narrating the hour. Kelly Clarkson, Joss Stone, Josh Groban, Katharine McPhee, the Tenors and the Vienna Boys Choir are among singers discussing and/or performing the enduring 1818 tune by Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr, while John Rhys-Davies ("Raiders of the Lost Ark") and other actors dramatize the effect of "Silent Night" on gener - ations of listeners. Noting he's "comfort- able sitting by a fireside," the amusing, genial Bonneville says that's largely what "Silent Night" requires of him. "It hadn't really come home to me quite how universal a song this is, all over the world. For each singer in - vited to talk about it here, it really has had a pro- found impact, from Israel to the Philippines. And it resonates extraordinarily with British and German folk." The latter aspect fuels a dramatization in "Silent Night," with Rhys-Da- vies playing World War I military leader Douglas Haig ("a mindless mover of men to the slaughter- house," per the actor), who doesn't want his British troops fraternizing with German counterparts on Christmas Eve in 1914. He's superseded, at least temporarily, when soldiers on both sides begin sing- ing — take a guess — "Si- lent Night." "A German came out of his tent waving a flag," Rhys-Davies recalls, "then he was joined by an English soldier and then more, and they ended up playing football together until the whistles were blown for them to get back in the trenches. It became one of those great, unset- tling moments in the war, (the thought being) you can't allow friendship be- tween two people who are fighting. "I think Haig under- stands the importance of the moment," adds Rhys-Davies, "yet he does not regret the fact that as commander-in-chief, he has to forbid it. We tend to think the First World War was a war of empires and monarchies, but it isn't wholly true. There had to be a peace in Europe, largely brought about because the British sort of bullied people into not fighting each other."
