Red Bluff falls to Shasta in baseball championship By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor REDDING — The seventh-seeded Red Bluff High baseball team, after staging a couple of upsets in the Northern Section Division 1 playoffs, finally fell back to Earth. Eric Lex allowed just two hits through six innings and the fifth-seeded Shasta Wolves took advantage of a series of Red Bluff defensive blunders to beat the Spartans 5-1 in the Northern Section D-1 title game Saturday at Shasta College. The Wolves (18-14) secured their first section championship since they won in 2004, and left the Spartans still in search of their first title since 1999. Red Bluff (19-14) had risen to the level and played better than its competition through this postseason. The team beat No. 2 Chico and No. 3 Pleasant Valley on the road with strong pitching from Walker Dodero and Kyle Martin in addition to timely hitting. On Saturday the Spartans got another strong start from Dodero, who pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed 4 hits, but it was Red Bluff's defense that didn't do itself any favors. The Spartans committed seven errors on the day, which led to Shasta's five runs. "We just didn't play good enough defense to win," Red Bluff coach Ryland Sanders said. "Our pitching was very good and we just didn't play behind (Dodero) well enough to come out ahead." The Wolves, in comparison, were sharp. Shasta turned double plays in the first and second innings and committed one error on the day. Perhaps when it all started falling apart for the Spartans was in the fourth inning, when Red Bluff was trailing Shasta 1-0 and still searching for its first hit. With an out recorded and star shortstop Evan Sinclair at the plate, Red Bluff's coaches made it known they were not happy with the strike zone. After Sinclair struck out, he turned his head, let the home plate umpire know how he felt, and was quickly tossed. The expression on his face as he walked toward the dugout showed regret. "It was just a big mistake on my part," Sinclair said. "Looking back on it, I just learned a lesson." Sanders said it was a big moment, but the loss wasn't about one player. Shasta added two runs to its lead off Spartan throwing errors in the bottom of the fourth, and it took advantage of a couple of Red Bluff errors in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Red Bluff managed to put together its strongest opportunity to score in the sixth, when it loaded the bases with one out but only walked away with a run in the inning after Dodero brought Garrett Sandow across the plate by being hit by a pitch. The Wolves capped their offensive output in the bottom of the sixth, when Bailey Odell reached base on a fielding error and was brought in by a triple off the bat of Wade Gulden. Shasta pitcher Dean McMurtrey allowed runners on first and third with two outs in the top of the seventh, but finished the game with a strikeout that sealed the Wolves' section title win. ——— Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 527-2151, ext. 111 or at spor ts@redbluffdailynews.com. Colon, who turns 40 on Friday, gave up two runs on six hits and struck out three. It was the first win for Colon (3-3) since April 23 at Boston. Coco Crisp got three hits, and had the first of three straight Oakland doubles in a four-run fifth inning that broke a 1-1 tie. He scored when Yeonis Cespedes hit a line drive just over Adrian Beltre's head with the third baseman playing in, and Cespedes came home on Brandon Moss' line drive to the wall in right. Josh Lindblom (0-1) lost in his 2013 debut and first major league start. By JEFF LARSON MediaNews Group PARADISE — The Paradise High varsity softball team needed all 21 outs to secure its fourth Northern Section title in school history over Red Bluff. The 21st and final out was perhaps the most significant, due in part to the magnitude of the game. With two runners on, Red Bluff's Haley Harris lifted a blast to left that could have cleared the fence by a few feet in many parks around the North State. But in Paradise, the outfield fence is 250 feet deep roughly from foul pole to foul pole, which allowed senior Jessica Jackson extra time to retreat back and haul in the game's final out — while remaining on her feet still — and preserve a 3-1 victory for the top-seeded Bobcats over No. 2 Red Bluff in the section's D-III championship game Saturday afternoon in Paradise. "(We) thought it was over her head when (Harris) first hit it, but of course JJ is pretty fast and kept gaining on it, so we were hoping," Paradise coach Lennie Dean said.
