5B Tuesday, May 21, 2013 – Daily News Klamath recreation sites open The Klamath National Forest is ready to welcome visitors for the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Many campgrounds and recreation sites across the Forest are already open. Camping While most popular campgrounds fill up, there are many camping opportunities throughout the Forest. Campgrounds on the Salmon/Scott River Ranger District are open. The water system at Kangaroo Campground is undergoing repairs; potable water will be available sometime in June when the repairs are finished. On the Goosenest Ranger District all campgrounds will be open beginning on Saturday, May 18th with the exception of Martin's Dairy Horse Camp, which is scheduled to open in July following the installation of a new toilet. On the Happy Camp/Oak Knoll Ranger District most campgrounds are open. O'Neil Creek Campground, near Hamburg, will remain closed this season as major repairs are made to upgrade the water system. Visitors may choose to camp at nearby Sarah Totten Campground until the repairs are completed. Please remember that due to the potential to start wildfires, fireworks are not permitted on the National Forest. Campfire permits may be obtained at any Forest Service office. Reservations Many campgrounds feature sites that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reservable camping opportunities include Juanita Lake Group Campsite on the Goosenest Ranger District, Tree of Heaven Campground, Sarah Totten Campground Group Campsites and Curly Jack Campground Group Campsites on the Happy Camp / Oak Knoll Ranger District, and Indian Scotty Group Campsite and Carter Meadows Horse Group Campsite on the Salmon / Scott River Ranger District. There is a non-refundable convenience fee for using the reservation system; the fee is $10.00 for phone reservations and $9.00 for web reservations. Reservations can be made online at www.recreation.gov or by calling the toll free number 1-877444-6777. The Klamath National Forest combines appropriated funds with recreation fees to help maintain amenities and provide services at recreation sites across the Forest. The majority of funds collected at fee campsites remain on the Forest to operate, maintain and improve facilities and programs at the sites where fees are collected. Trails With recent warm temperatures, trails at higher elevations are opening quickly but visitors may encounter snow above 6,200 feet. Caution should be used when crossing streams without bridges as water levels can change quickly with continued snow melt. For additional information call the nearest District office or visit the Klamath National Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/klamath. Tips to keep pets, employees safe from bites For utility workers, a dog's bite is always worse than its bark. Every day, utility employees across California need to enter yards and homes to provide gas and electric services to customers. This routine part of their job can be hazardous when dog owners leave pets loose. May 19-25 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week, a public service campaign that emphasizes the need for increased pet owner responsibility in the prevention of dog bites. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), Southern California Edison (SCE), Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas), and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) remind customers to keep dogs secure when a utility worker is • Contact your local utilities or check your monthly bills for the dates when utility workers are scheduled to conduct meter readings. On those days, leave gates unlocked and keep your dogs or other pets securely confined in another section of the property. • Dogs may become more protective in the presence of their owners. Dog owners or guardians should make sure their dog is securely confined where it cannot come into contact with the utility worker or they should restrain their dog when utility workers are in their presence. • If the utility worker is outside, keep your dog securely confined inside. If the worker is inside, keep your dog securely confined outside. scheduled to visit a home or business. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dogs bite about 4.5 million people in the United States each year, with one in five dog bites resulting in injuries that require medical attention. Although children are the most common victims, dozens of utility employees in California are moderately to severely injured by dogs each year. Here are some tips to help prevent dog bites and provide a safe environment for both your pets and utility employees: • Securely confine or relocate your dog during scheduled customer service visits and when it's time for utility workers to read your meter. • Post a Beware of Dog sign on your fence or house to avoid any surprises. • Leave a note on your meter explaining that you have a dog and how and where it is confined. • Be sure all vaccinations and inoculations for rabies and parasites are up to date. • Train your dog to obey simple commands like "sit," "stay," "no" and "come." Obedience training can teach dogs proper behavior and help owners control their dogs in any situation. • Collar your dog, so you have the means to quickly restrain your dog in any emergency. • If you get a new dog, contact your local utilities to let them know. Paint recycling program available in county Oct. 19, 2012 marked the first day of the California Paint Stewardship Program established by a new law, AB 1343 (2010) by Assembly Member Jared Huffman, that requires paint manufacturers to develop a take back system for leftover paint from household and commercial consumers. Paint manufacturers, through the American Coatings Association, created PaintCare, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to administer the state programs. The non-profit will arrange for recycling and proper disposal of unused paint and conduct public education about proper paint management. Tehama County collection sites: Paint Mart, 435 Antelope Blvd., Red Bluff, 530-527-5636 Ace Hardware, 2020 Solano St. Corning, 530-824-1512 Ace Hardware, 7930 State Hwy 99E, Los Molinos, 530-384-1250 More than 700 million gallons of architectural paint is sold each year in the U.S., and about 10 percent is available for recycling. Until now, leftover paint has been handled primarily by government-run household hazardous waste programs -- many with strained budgets and limited days of operation. "This program will make proper paint management more convenient for the public by setting up hundreds of new paint drop-off sites at retailers throughout the state," said Marjaneh Zarrehparvar, executive director of PaintCare. "It will also help local governments that partner with PaintCare by paying for the paint they already accept through their household hazardous waste programs." Funding for the program will come from a Recovery Fee that will be applied to the purchase price of paint sold in California and paid to PaintCare. PaintCare will use the fees to pay for the transportation of leftover paint from partnering drop-off sites to processors for recycling and energy recovery. These fees will also assist PaintCare in its efforts to educate consumers on the importance of buying the correct amount of paint, using up leftover paint, keeping paint out of the trash, and recycling remaining unusable paint.
