CHAPTER GRAND
David "Dills" Dillon '73 entered Chapter Grand on April 17 at
the age of 69. David was born on January 16, 1951, in Lebanon,
Ind., and married Denise on December 31, 1987. He graduated
from DePauw University with a master's in education, focused
on composition and journalism. David taught English for many
years at North Putnam High School in Indiana. He continued his
education in psychology and counseling at Drake University to
complete his LISW. He practiced as a marital and family therapist,
as well as a mental health clinic director, in Iowa and then
Tennessee until his retirement. David loved spending time with
his children and their friends. He was always eager for gatherings,
whether it was a holiday or a routine Taco Tuesday with his
grandkids. His excitement about being with friends and the people
he loved often elevated a hike outdoors or a board game into a
memorable event.
ALUMNI NEWS
Gerald L. Ward '56 shared the following story, titled "Becoming a
Phi Delt":
"In the spring of '52, Bud Sutton '56 and I headed for
Greencastle from Rochelle, Ill., a town of about 4,000. (Bud's
passing was noted in the fall 2019 newsletter.) We were pretty
certain of enrolling at DPU, but thought it a good idea to check out
the city and the campus.
"In those days, the University assigned prospective male students
to the fraternities willing to host them for a weekend. Hard to
believe, eh? We were assigned to Phi Delta Theta. As small-town
lads, we knew nothing about fraternities.
"The brothers treated us royally, touring us about the campus and
the town and imparting much information along the way.
"The night before heading home, we found ourselves sequestered
in the kitchen with a few of the brothers. While supplying us
with cookies and milk (not kidding), they extolled the virtues of
a DePauw education, and more particularly, the great benefits
to accrue from becoming Phi Delt spring pledges, perfectly legal
then. We were feeling a bit of pressure and becoming a little
nervous. They then mentioned two points which hit home. As
spring pledges, we would not have to go through the hassle and
confusion of [recruitment] week, and we would also have an
immediate home upon arriving on campus. We allowed as how
this sounded good, and we said yes to becoming spring pledges.
Truthfully, we would have no doubt said yes to whatever fraternity
we were assigned.
"It was not long after arriving on campus that Bud and I realized
we had indeed found the best home and that we were very lucky
to have been assigned to Phi Delta Theta.
"It was a decision we never regretted."
