Friday HEALTHY HEART DAY Baked Chicken, Parsley Carrots, Beet & Mandarin Salad, Tropical Fruit Cup Yes, I was only 9 years old and had arrived in Red Bluff with my brother, Gary, and our parents, Guy and Marjorie Hacker. It was during the 1944 year that we became connected to the Hacker family. One of our aunts, Faye Hacker married Leslie Howard Swanson. They were married in 1938. I was the first grandchild for the Hacker family. I was born in 1937. Faye and Howard (he used his middle name) together managed a phone company from 1938 until June 23, 1942. By the time I arrived to my Hacker relatives the telephone company was absorbed by the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. What my cousins and I did during that closure of a telephone company allowed us to pick up all the old fashioned telephones and play with them pretending we were calling each other. The phones were a whole lot different than they are now. Not only did I get acquainted with the old telephones, I later discovered that the original producer of telephones in Tehama County was a man called "Broomstick" Swanson. It seems that his real name was Robert Leslie Swanson who established a telephone system that ran from the Antelope area in Red Bluff through Payne's Creek to Manton, via Lane Valley. I was embarrassed and said, ''Fine.'' By Sunday, however, Mom said she didn't want to go. This is how it is with her for every occasion. When I do convince her to go, she procrastinates and we arrive late. She then falls asleep and later complains that she didn't have a good time. Part of this is dementia, but it's also her personality. She has always been a manipulator. What Mom really wants is for me to be with her 24/7. She has even suggested that I sleep on the tiled floor next to her bed. The staff members don't see this. So, please do not humiliate the adult children. Please cut this out of your newspaper (or print it from the website) and bring it to the nursing home where the staff can see it. They mean well, but this is not appropriate. Dear Annie: I read the letter from ''Uneasy About Switching,'' who wants to change hairstylists. I am a hairstylist, and I have realized over the years that we can't possibly please everyone. I have had clients I treasured and thought were ''forever clients,'' but when I couldn't accommodate them due to scheduling, surgery, etc., they went to someone else. It hurt my feelings until I realized we don't ''own'' anyone. In fact, I, too, have switched who does my hair over the years. But I would appreciate being told why. — A Hairstylist Who Understands Annie's Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
