Alpha Mu Chapter 4 THE TOMAHAWK T he Alumni Corporation Board (ACB) recently visited how our alumni governing structure can most optimally serve our undergraduates and alumni membership. With so many highly skilled recent graduates of our chapter, it was felt we should take advantage of their resources. After careful consideration, the board approved the following restructure. A significantly greater emphasis on the Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) being involved with advising our undergraduate chapter, relying on input from both the undergraduate chapter and alumni leadership as to how best accomplish this. Josh Hibben '02 will transition into and assume the role of the chairman of the CAB and, as a result, will assume the new title of chapter advisor. Long-standing volunteer Jon Fleming '75 will serve as a consultative resource to Brother Hibben and assume a title of chapter advisor emeritus. The ACB will still focus on short- and long- term finances, facility maintenance, and legal/ contract issues. Formation of a Chapter Alumni Association (CAA), which will focus on alumni and donor relations and event planning. The transition period will allow the CAB, ACB, and CAA to develop defined roles and responsibilities, as well as to minimize excessive overlap and inefficiencies, and develop a structured process for alumni to volunteer for the CAB, ACB, and CAA. In the interim, those interested should contact either Brother Hibben at jhibben@gmail.com or Brother Fleming at mrjfcy393@gmail.com. Changes in Alumni Governing Structure W hen Ed Gschneidner '83 thinks of his younger days at Alpha Mu, he thinks of parade floats, barbecues on the front porch, and other great memories. The Theta Chi brotherhood gave him much more than that, though. "It provided an opportunity for leadership, a caring but fun community, and friends that lasted a lifetime." The teamwork inherent in fraternity life also prepared Ed for a thriving professional career. He has led a successful architectural career and is now the president of Opus AE Group, in which he is responsible for finances and overall operation, as well as leading the project architecture group. Ed feels that fraternity leadership opportunities helped him understand the dynamics of organizations and how the people in them can work together. Ed has always wanted to help Alpha Mu be successful, so he chose to bring those skills back to the chapter by serving on the alumni board. He has been a member for more than 20 years and is now in his final term. "It's been a great way to give back to an organization that gave so much to me in my formative years." Through his decades on the board, Ed has been part of many highlights and accomplishments, such as rebuilding the chapter house and then keeping it afloat in times where Greek life popularity struggled among college students. "While we at Alpha Mu are lucky to have a very dedicated group of alumni, there are always more roles to fill and ways to help," Ed said. "I think staying involved as an alum is a rewarding experience." Part of that comes from working with the ever-impressive active chapter. "COVID-19 has stressed the chapter and our undergraduate members beyond belief. The leadership of our executive council has been exemplary, and the continued dedication of the entire chapter to making the best of the situation is quite admirable." Ed lives in Edina, Minnesota, and can be reached at gschneidner@comcast.net. For the Good of Our Brothers Ed Gschneidner '83 Reflects on His Years of Alumni Service
