N O T E S O F T H E L Y R E | P A G E 2 I t's difficult to put into words what Phi Chapter has meant to so many sisters over the years. The values of Alpha Chi Omega have propelled us in our careers, helped us raise our families, and allowed us to become Real. Strong. Women. after graduating from the University of Kansas. Life as we know it has changed due to COVID-19, but the lessons we learned from Phi Chapter are more important than ever. It's crucial that our undergraduate sisters and prospective members have ΑΧΩ as a platform to center their lives around during these unprecedented times. We launched the Supporting Our Sisters campaign to ensure that Phi Chapter prevails through the pandemic. The campaign helped the House Corporation compensate for the financial shortfall created by a reduced number of members living in the chapter house. We are beyond grateful for the 117 sisters who collectively contributed $20,391 toward the campaign. It is clear that they are thankful for everything ΑΧΩ has given them and that they understand the impact our sisterhood can have on college-age women at KU for years to come. The SOS campaign will conclude at the end of the year, so it's not too late to give back to Phi Chapter. You can make your gift today by visiting KansasAlphaChiOmega.causevox.com. Phi Chapter felt like home while she attended KU, and it was where she formed lifelong friendships and gained leadership experience that has aided in her professional endeavors. "I appreciate those who came before me and ensured that Phi was a strong chapter when I joined, and I want to be sure that the same opportunity is there for young women today," Celeste shared. "I was able to serve in a variety of elected roles that gave me valuable leadership experience, and I was able to draw on that experience as I volunteered at other organizations and took on more responsibilities in my professional career." As executive director for Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri, Celeste loves working with the members at all levels of the organization and enjoys mentoring emerging leaders who make a difference in the Kansas City community. "The League launched a new event in 2018, C3KC, a leadership conference that brings together corporate, community, and civic sectors to spark change in our community," she said. "It has been rewarding to be a part of the fundraising and planning of this developing event that has grown each year." The most challenging aspect of her position has been the inability to gather and collaborate easily during the pandemic. While the League has been creative in coming up with new ways to deliver the trainings and bring their 1,300+ members together, they all miss being in person. "I am hopeful we can resume gathering as soon as it is safe," she added. Celeste also looks forward to when she can safely reunite with her Alpha Chi Omega sisters; a group of AXΩs in and around her pledge class have stayed connected in recent years. "We reconnected during Phi's anniversary celebration a few years back," she shared. "We had so much fun sharing memories and catching up with each other that we make it a point to see each other during the year and have even taken a few road trips together." When asked to share the top three things she learned from Alpha Chi Omega, Celeste recalled that she learned how to be a leader, how valuable lifelong friendships are for celebrating joys and sharing in difficulties, and that The Symphony of AXΩ is an inspirational gift. "A few years ago, Betsy Block Baltzer '78, gave me a copy of The Symphony of AXΩ, which I hadn't thought about for many years. I found the message to be powerful and comforting. Taking a few minutes each day to reflect on this poem has been a gift," she said. "The message to see beauty in the common things, spread love to those around me, and, especially during these tumultuous times, to see and appreciate the best in others no matter how different they are than me is so uplifting." Celeste and her husband, Brian, have two grown daughters with families of their own, one granddaughter, and two more grandchildren on the way. She's passionate about education and is a "lifelong learner" who enjoys yoga, cooking, reading, and walking Gracie, their Goldendoodle. They are residents of Brookside, a neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri. Connect with Celeste at cmgreenlee@gmail.com.
