October 21, 2020 www.DesertMessenger.com 15 Herbmama Bitters... a digestive aid Bitters....ever heard of them?? They have been around for a millenia. What do they do? They can ease indigestion, heartburn, nausea, cramping, bloating & gas. They stimulate the digestive process, pro- mote better absorption of nutrients & stimulate natural detoxification. They help to activate gastric juices, bile & digestive enzymes. They can help lower blood sugar levels, have a positive effect on stress & help to curb sugar cravings. They contain inulin, a prebiotic starch which plays an important role in gut health. Inulin stimulates the pro- duction of insulin from the pancreas. Bitters can counter brain re- ceptors that drive us to consume sweets. Studies show that inulin improves the metabolism of carbs & therefore helps control blood sugar. They can reduce food sensi- tivities, leaky gut syndrome, auto- immune reactions & can promote healthy bowel regularity. Bitters stimulate appetite, release digestive enzymes from the pancreas, duode- num & the liver. They are proving to regulate secretion of the pancreatic hormones that help to regulate the body's blood sugar, insulin & glu- cagon levels. They can also help in repairing tears in the gut wall. So here's a list I've compiled of herbs and foods that contain bit- ters....ready??!!! Chamomile Barberry Milk Thistle Peppermint Yarrow Arugula Endive Radicchio Artichoke Leaf Dandelion Burdock Root Motherwort Gentian Root Wormwood Mugwort Chicory root Get the dental care you deserve with dental insurance from Physicians Mutual Insurance Company. If I were to write that in my modern mode, I'd say, "Do you wanna live? Or you wanna die? Well, get on with it." Don't think centuries from now people would be quoting that, do you? My decision is not so life threaten- ing, maybe life-changing, but who knows? "To go or not to go", that has been the question. You see, I have a wonderful life that encom- passes two worlds. Wonderful Tim- ber Valley, Oregon-just as the name implies in a green forested valley in the summer and dear Quartzsite, Arizona, snug and inviting in the winter. I have both! But this year I chose to choose. Usually, come September-Octo- ber I automatically begin the tran- sition: pack and prepare mentally and physically for the 1,181 mile trip south. Yes, mentally, always I wonder am I up to the trip? Alone. No protection but my phone. Much multi- laned traffic through Sacra- mento. I can lose my car in a well- known parking lot, what makes me think I can navigate south even on a familiar route? Then one of my fa- vorite phrases pops into my head: "I will not let fear rule my life." And physically. So many things to prepare my northern home for the winter while I'm gone. Water off, lines blown; one year when that wasn't done properly a line rup- tured. We shan't go into that. Last year a connection broke under the kitchen sink when my "handyman" was trying to unwinterize my rig. I missed all the excitement but prob- ably just as well. You know they say, this day has never been before and will never be again. Maybe it should be: this year has never been before and (we hope) will never be again. We've been tested by viruses and fire and now we're awaiting the flu. Will conditions be better or worse, here To be or not to be... or there? Reluctantly, I've decided to stay, trading the "there" for the well-known "here." But yet, we're not the first genera- tion to be tested; maybe the first to moan and groan about it on national TV. We've shared our woes, wouldn't we be better-off if we shared our joys? Count our blessings. We've got a chicken in every pot (bought ready cooked at the store) and two cars and an RV in every driveway. What more do we need? Oh, yeah, my neighbor has an ice maker, I don't. Should I feel deprived? Nah, I've got two ice trays; how many ice cubes can I use at once? There are folks who care about us: friends, relatives. And we care about them. Caring and sharing. That's what we need and we are so blessed with. Don't be afraid to care and to share the good things and I'll betcha the bad things will kinda disappear. At least the mountains of negativity may become molehills; give it a try. Just adding these to your daily routine can help with digestion, be- cause they contain bitters!!! Add- ing ginger to a few of these, can help speed up the emptying of the stomach. If you add cinnamon, it can also lower the levels of blood sugars. Chicory root, is from the dandelion family & is a good coffee substitute. Pregnant women or those with ul- cers should avoid bitters.
