Things have certainly changed since our last newsletter. With the arrival of COVID-19, the University of Missouri closed in March, and the remainder of the spring semester academic year was conducted virtually. Along with student housing and other Greek chapters, 603 Kentucky remained empty until August when Mizzou's campus reopened. While waiting for Mizzou to decide if they would hold classes this fall, as well as the status and look of in-house living and Recruitment Week, the Facility Corporation Board began proactively preparing. We formed a COVID-19 Task Force, which immediately began researching the resources, policies, and procedures necessary to keep our members safe upon their return. When Mizzou gave the green light, both to reopening and holding Recruitment Week, we were ready. Recruitment Week was held virtually; however, members participated from the chapter house. Prior to their return, the house was thoroughly cleaned following federal, state, and local guidelines. Hand sanitizer machines were placed in all common rooms along with antibacterial wipe stations in all bathrooms and printer areas. HEPA air filtration systems were set up in the common areas—main floor, laundry room, and bathrooms—with bedrooms having individual, self-contained HVAC units. A quarantine room was established for temporary use. New policies and procedures were also enacted. Before returning, all members received a COVID-19 precautions and planning document detailing the new protocols relating to everything from eating to meetings. Members committed to following the plan in writing. Additionally, each in-house member provided a move-out plan in the event she needed to quarantine or isolate. Staff and venders were also advised of the additional policies and expectations. Although Recruitment Week looked very different, Alpha Mu's success did not––once again we met our quota, welcoming 67 new young ladies into the Theta sisterhood! As the semester progresses, everyone continues working together to keep our members safe. This includes following recommended cleaning and sanitization guidelines, using masks, handwashing, maintaining social distancing, using assigned bathrooms, respecting others' comfort levels, following the established reporting system for possible exposures and/or positive test results, and quickly adhering to any quarantine or isolation directives. Although this has been the work of many, a special thanks needs to go to the chapter's executive officers, Mama Kathy, Rebecca Jones '89, Angel Stewart '81, Sophie Chambers '04, and Cori Young '82. Navigating these waters has been no easy task and could not have been done without their efforts. Until next time, stay healthy!
