Many of his older friends had joined the fraternity, which helped him get to know Eta Chapter before his freshman year. Even more meaningful, though, was that Richard would be the third generation in his family to join the chapter, following his late grandfather, W.R. Newman Jr. 1929, and his father, W.R. Newman III '61. Continuing a near-century tradition of Eta Sigs, the Newman family was excited to have Richard's son, W. Richard Newman V '23, join last fall too. From basement parties to visiting the house and seeing old friends, the Newmans are thankful for the many friendships and experiences they have shared with Sigma Chi brothers over the years. "It was always interesting to meet new brothers whose fathers were friends with mine," Richard said. "I enjoy when my son tells me about a new friend and I can say I know his dad." Richard encourages his son and all Eta undergraduates to get know their brothers well and keep in touch with them over the years. "Having a diverse group of men is valuable, and it's nice when traveling to have someone to get in touch with in most towns in the state." Together as a family, the Newmans are proud to support the Building on a Tradition of Excellence campaign. In fact, supporting previous renovation campaigns has also been a part of the family legacy. W.R. Jr. 1929 was involved with the construction campaign for the first Sigma Chi house in 1957 and helped facilitate its financing. W.R. III '61 was chairman of the capital campaign for the house renovation in 1993, and Richard assisted with that campaign as well as the current one. The family hopes all brothers who are able will join them in supporting this project to ensure Sigma Chi has a home at Ole Miss forever. Richard '88 works in the self-storage industry and is the owner of Storage Depot, LLC. He can be reached at richardnewman4444@gmail.com or (601) 624-9490. Four Generations of Sigma Chi The Newman Family Brings Their Undying Support to the Campaign Four generations of Newmans at Sigma Chi! From left: Richard Newman IV '88, Richard Newman V '23, and W.R. Newman III '61 attend Richard V's initiation together as a family in remembrance of W.R. Newman Jr. 1929. W.R. Newman Jr. 1929 participates in the groundbreaking ceremony for the original chapter house in 1957. A s a member of the class that started at the old chapter house, Dr. Donald Davis Sr. '58 has seen the chapter through many phases at Ole Miss. He experienced his undergraduate years there and also shares the Sigma Chi bond with his sons, Don Davis Jr. '90 and Joseph Davis '92. While sharing the Sigma Chi experience has strengthened the relationship Donald has with his sons, it wasn't until years after they graduated that he wrote another check to Eta Chapter—a generous check that sparked a matching gift challenge and helped the capital campaign raise more than $2 million before it was even publically announced. Donald knew from experience how hard it can be to raise money for the fraternity, so he's doing his part as an alumnus to help. Committed to the Betterment of the Brotherhood Dr. Donald Davis Sr. '58 Sparked Successful Matching Gift Challenge for Eta Chapter (Continued on page 4)
