2A – Daily News – Tuesday, July 6, 2010 Community people&events Celebrate Collector Car Day Many local residents participate in the old car hobby. Car events within reasonable driving distance occur almost every weekend, and sometimes during the week. In response, Congress has initiated National Collector Car Appreciation Day. The U.S. Senate unanimously passed SR 513 designat- ing Friday, July 9, 2010, as Collector Car Appreciation Day. This effort was undertaken by SEMA Action Network in Washington, DC, as a means to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in Ameri- can society. The day will also provide an opportunity for enthusiasts, like you, to gather at events nationwide to celebrate this spe- cial day and raise awareness of the importance of a great American hobby. Across the country, events are being planned to recog- nize this important day for collectors and enthusiasts. Car cruises, club gatherings and other fun events will take place to recognize the importance of preserving the heritage of the United States by encouraging the restoration and exhibition of collector cars. The success of the resolution is only as strong as your participation in events on July 9, and we are asking all to get involved and make the first Collector Car Appreciation Day one for the history books. Here are some ways you can get involved to make July 9 a special day: • If you own a collector car, drive it to work and show your coworkers. • If you are a member of a car club, host an event or move a gathering to July 9 from its original date. •If you are a member of another hobbyist organization, think about partnering with clubs in your area to attract more participants and make a big splash on the first Collec- tor Car Appreciation Day. • Don’t forget to invite your friends, neighbors, and even your local elected officials to events in your area to get them involved in the hobby. If you or your car club are planning to recognize the occasion or would like information on setting up a Collec- tor Car Appreciation Day event, please contact SAN Direc- tor Ethan Landesman at ethanl@sema.org as soon as possi- ble. We will then add your event to the master list available at www.semasan.com and publicize your event to the national enthusiast community. Zach Whitten continues his hands-on learning through a grant from the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians. Whitten brings his experiences as both a stu- dent and teacher to 6- to 12-year-olds attending the summer camps program. Each week’s camp fea- tures a new and very dif- ferent focus. July 5-9 will focus on “Prehistoric California.” Youth will have an oppor- tunity to learn about who and what lived in the area long before man ever arrived. They will learn about some of the very small creatures such as trilobites and ammonites as well as very large ani- mals like mammoths, dinosaurs and grizzlies. They will learn about vol- canic eruptions, asteroid impacts and plate tecton- ics. They will even go on a paleontological dig — who knows what they might find. They may even create their own volcano. Whitten is assisted and youth are supervised by two graduate Natural Resource Interns and the Discovery Center manag- er. The positions are fund- ed through a grant provid- ed by Pacific Gas & Elec- tric Co. The summer camps meet each day from 8 a.m. until noon, at 1000 Sale Lane. Camper scholarships funds may be available thanks to generous dona- tions from Soroptimist International of Red Bluff, Kiwanis of Red Bluff and Wells Fargo Bank. All campers will be provided juice, water and snacks each day. Each week’s camp will feature art and crafts, a take home activity and learning from people who work with the featured topic.
