Manson follower faces parole board for 19th time LOS ANGELES (AP) — Leslie Van Houten, the one-time Charles Manson follower long seen as the most likely of his ex- acolytes to win freedom someday, faces her 19th parole hearing with a new lawyer and new case law which may give her the best chance yet for release. Even if there is a finding of suitability for parole at Tuesday’s hearing, freedom would not be immediate. The entire state parole board would review the decision within 120 days and it would then be sub- mitted to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for a final ruling. Van Houten, 60, remains incarcerated at the Califor- nia Institution for Women at Frontera, the same prison where another Manson fol- lower, Patricia Krenwinkle, is imprisoned. Susan Atkins, the third woman convicted of murder in the crimes directed by cult leader Manson, died in prison last year after parole officials denied her dying request for freedom. Van Houten last appeared before a parole board in 2007. Her chances for parole are enhanced by the fact that she has been discipline free since her incarceration in the early 1970s, has positive psycho- logical reports and has been active in self-help groups at the prison including ‘‘Gold- en Girls,’’ a group for elder- ly women inmates. She has a new lawyer, Brandie Devall, who told The Associated Press she will refer to rulings by the California Supreme Court in 2008 and 2009 affecting standards for parole. A checkpoint in Los Molinos Friday had 559 vehicles pass through it between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. with eight field sobri- ety tests conducted. While there were no arrests at the checkpoint there was one citation issued for an open container violation. Officers made four DUI arrests on Saturday with the California High- way Patrol arresting Mar- cos Salinas, 32, of Corn- ing; Joseph Rodriguez, 37, of Redding, who was in a traffic collision; and Robert Morini, 56, of Crescent City. Red Bluff Police netted one arrest with Sofronio Morales Gonzales, 29, of Hamilton City. During the same 48-hour time frame in 2009 officers had arrested six people for DUI. Three more people were arrested for DUI Sunday with Red Bluff Police arresting Joshua B. Snodgrass, 27, of Red Bluff, and CHP arresting Grayson Hartman, 30, of Napa, and John Alavado, 34, of Loma Rica. In 2009, the campaign had netted seven arrests and there had been one alcohol related death dur- ing the same 72-hour time frame. Avoid The Five was still patrolling through midnight Monday with saturation patrols sched- uled for the cities of Red Bluff, Corning and Gerber. The next campaign will be the summer mobilization Labor Day campaign set to start on Aug. 20. Enjoying a day of independence By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer With an extra day off for the Fourth of July hol- iday and the warm, sunny weather Monday, many people were out enjoying the recreational opportu- nities of Tehama County. Keith Curl, a Red Bluff Police Community Ser- vice Officer, worked traf- fic control on the Fourth of July, but spent Monday enjoying a trip on Lake Red Bluff with his friend Tom Rahming, of Red Bluff. Curl said, while he has never had the Fourth of July holiday off having spent 23 years in the Army prior to his time working for the police department, he was enjoy- ing his outing Monday helping Rahming test drive his boat. “It’s nice to celebrate our nation’s birthday,” Curl said. “I didn’t get the chance yesterday so today I’m enjoying a day out on the water.” Herman Battles, of Red Bluff, spent the Fourth of See DAY, page 7A Daily News photo by Julie Zeeb Tom Rahming and Keith Curl, both of Red Bluff, enjoy a day out on the water Monday, test driving Rahming’s boat on Lake Red Bluff.
