Saturday, May 11, 2013 – Daily News 3B VITA tax-prep volunteers appreciated for another great year Certified volunteer tax preparers and those who donated tax preparation sites were honored on Friday, May 3, at the County Administration Building in Red Bluff for their efforts in boosting tax refunds for Tehama County residents. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offered through the Tehama County Community Action Agency, with the efforts in tax preparation from all of their wonderful volunteers, generated refunds in excess of $420,000 for households in Tehama County. "This program has been offered in Tehama County for the last five years to assist low to moderate income households with filing Federal and California State tax returns completely free of charge," Tabetha O'Quinn, Lead Community Services Aide and VITA Site Coordinator, said. "This tax season alone, with the hard work of the committed volunteers and staff, the program was able to assist 232 households with the filing of their returns. We would also like to thank our IRS liaison, Monica Kyle." Becoming certified is no easy task and VITA's preparers are trained and recertified by the IRS each year for the VITA program, O'Quinn said. "We wanted to thank everyone involved in the great success the VITA program was able to achieve this year," Community Services Supervisor said Mike Baldwin. "It is because of their individual dedication and willingness to serve and we wanted to recognize their hard work and commitment." According to IRS and Community Action Agency statistics, the services Tehama Country Real Estate offered through the VITA Program saved families an estimated total of $38,500 in tax preparation fees and brought back $422,452 in refunds to the pockets of Tehama County taxpayers. In Tehama County, VITA tax preparers focus on claiming tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for clients. According to the IRS, to qualify for the EITC, claimants must be qualified working U.S. citizens and individuals with valid Social Security numbers meeting income eligibility requirements. If a U.S. resident meets all of the qualifications, they may also be able to retroactively claim the EITC for a period of up to three years. "This was just a small token of appreciation for all of the hard work that was generated by a great team this year," Tehama County VITA Site Coordinator Laura Rodriguez said.
