Dodero deals as Spartans stage upset By TRAVIS SOUDERS Chico Enterprise-Record CHICO — By the numbers, it will go down as an upset. No. 2 seeds are supposed to beat No. 7 seeds in the first round. The Red Bluff High baseball team never did care for its low seeding, seventh of eight teams in the Northern Section CIF Division I playoffs. The Spartans went out and proved how displeased they were, and it started on the mound with sophomore left-hander Walker Dodero. Dodero carried a shutout into the seventh inning, Tyler Boone drove in two runs and the Spartans outplayed and defeated the Panthers 5-0 at Skip McDonald Field on Friday afternoon to advance to the semifinals. "We felt confident that if we played our game, we'd compete," Red Bluff coach Ryland Sanders said. "We've felt that way all year. We've had peaks, valleys, but when we play our game we can compete with anybody." Chico (18-8) had its choice in aces to send to the mound, between Morey Marshall and Clayton Schuler. The Panthers likely hadn't planned on needing them both to stay in the game, but that's what transpired as the Spartans (17-13) rallied for a two-out run in the first, added a pair of unearned scores in the second and all but wrapped it up with two more in the sixth. Not that they needed much more insurance — the Panthers put nine runners on base, stranding every single one of them against Red Bluff pitching. It hardly felt like an upset at all. "They're a lot better than we anticipated," Marshall said. "Their whole lineup can hit, and the guy on the mound was phenomenal. He had a great day." The afternoon indeed belonged to Dodero, who walked five but allowed just four hits and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings. He was given the chance to go for the shutout, but loaded the bases with back-to-back walks to end his day at the 104-pitch mark. He wasn't ready to go — when Sanders walked out to get him, the lefty gave him a stern, open hand, as if to signal his coach to stay where he was — but Mitch Fox was on regardless, and punched out Marshall and Shuler to end it. "I thought that was a little … interesting," Sanders said with a smile of Dodero's gesture. "Even when I got out there, he gave me a look and goes, 'Are you really taking me out?' He was not excited about it." Dodero spent most the afternoon throwing his breaking ball for strikes, keeping the Panthers offbalance and fielding his position supremely. He had four assists and even made one unassisted putout, an impressive play where he fielded an infield grounder by Schuler and simply beat him to the bag on a dead sprint. On paper, perhaps Marshall might have been the favorite to turn in a sterling outing, and he wasn't bad — he went four innings, allowing four hits while walking one and striking out five — but he was undone by a two-run throwing error in the second inning at third base on a slow roller, after he'd hit a batter and allowed a double to Boone in the first after he'd struck out the first two hitters he faced. Schuler tossed a clean fifth, his first inning of relief, but ran into more trouble in the sixth when Jared Poore drove in Will Macdonald before Boone's bases-loaded single brought in the Spartans' fifth run. It spelled doom for the Panthers, whose bats were silenced by Red Bluff's star sophomore. No strangers to late-inning magic this season, Chico hinted at a rally, loading the bases with one out in the seventh. But it was all for naught. Friday was not the Panthers' day at the plate. "Right around the fifth inning, we started getting in panic mode," Marshall said. "We just couldn't get any runs in." Kevin Campos went 2 for 3 for Chico, while Evan Sinclair, Boone and Macdonald all had two hits apiece. The Spartans will play Pleasant Valley in the semifinal round. ——— Connect with Sports Writer Travis Souders at twitter.com/travissouders. SACRAMENTO KINGS Hansen increases bid for Kings to $625 million SEATTLE (AP) — If this is Chris Hansen's final salvo in his attempt to purchase the Sacramento Kings, it's coming with an additional $75 million price tag to what already could be the richest franchise sale in NBA history. Hansen increased his total valuation of the Kings from $550 million to $625 million on Friday in another attempt to sway NBA owners to allow him to buy the franchise and move it to Seattle. Hansen also announced on his website that he has guaranteed owners that the franchise would pay into the league's revenue-sharing system in Seattle and not collect money as it has in Sacramento. Hansen has had a deal since January to buy a 65 percent controlling interest in the Kings from the Maloof family. He originally offered a total valuation of $525 million, then Saturday AUTO RACING 3:30 p.m. FOX — NASCAR, Sprint Cup, Southern 500, at Darlington, S.C. 5 p.m. ESPN2 — NHRA, Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals, at Commerce, Ga. He hoped to move the team to Seattle and rename it the Sonics, who were relocated to Oklahoma City and renamed the Thunder in 2008. The NBA's relocation committee voted 7-0 last week to recommend that the NBA Board of Governors — which consists of all 30 owners — reject the Seattle move. The board is expected to vote on the issue at its meeting in Dallas on Wednesday. Hansen, in his Friday statement, said the Seattle group's arena proposal was more advanced than the one in Sacramento. He said the Seattle ownership group had bought all of the needed property, had 100 percent of the private financing ''committed and in place'' and added that the environ- ington, Ky. ''While we appreciate that this is a very difficult decision for the league and owners, we hope it is understood that we really believe the time is now to bring the NBA back to Seattle, and that it is paramount that we do everything we can to put Seattle's best foot forward in this process,'' Hansen said. What remains unknown, and likely won't be answered until next week's Board of Governors meeting, is if this valuation increase by Hansen will sway any votes. The potential of an increased purchase price would also raise the value of other franchises, but NBA Commissioner David Stern has said repeatedly during the process that this would not become a bidding war. GOLF Constantine tweeted after Hansen's announcement, ''This just got interesting.'' While the move by Hansen continued to fuel hope that the Kings could still end up in Seattle for the 2013 season, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said the city ''felt very confident'' about keeping the franchise in California. ''The NBA leadership and owners have always said that their decision would not be dictated by a bidding war. This was always about whether Sacramento, a community that has supported the NBA for 28 years, can put together a plan and organization to ensure the franchise can rebuild and thrive,'' he said in a statement.
