Council may reconsider rec worker layoff By TANG LOR DN Staff Writer The City Council’s decision to lay off a parks maintenance work- er could be rescinded at its meeting Tuesday. Since adopting the interim budget on June 29, which calls for laying off the maintenance worker and two other employees, city staff has found that the layoff could be more detrimen- tal for parks services than expected. A review of the mis- cellaneous employee contract found that all other temporary and sea- sonal employees must be laid off before a full-time employee can be laid off. Losing all these employ- ees would result in the immediate closure of the Red Bluff Community and Senior Center and some city parks, accord- ing to a staff report. Instead, the council is being asked to postpone the layoff for at least 5 months if not longer. The position would be funded by $20,000 that had been budgeted in the temporary, part-time account. At the same time, staff proposes hiring eight part time employees — four recreation leaders, two umpires and two scorekeepers. The additional employees are needed because of a high volume of recreation program participants. I-5 shift to start Tuesday By GEOFF JOHNSON DN Staff Writer Vacationing Red Bluff residents will return to a changed Interstate. Starting Tuesday CalTrans plans to shut down, temporarily, all three northbound lanes of Interstate 5, stretching from the Adobe Road Interchange to just over 5 miles to the south. The southbound lane — also three lanes, and now with an extended shoulder lane — will be converted to serve as four lanes, two running north and two running south. The change, bringing 50 mph speed limits to the area, is expected to last for two months, after which CalTrans will do the same for the northbound section, temporarily converting three north lanes into two south and two north. “The traffic will be directed,” CalTrans District 2 Spokeswoman Denise Yergensen said. “(Drivers) just need to remember to slow down, and be very cautious, especially See SHIFT, page 3A Police find man’s body in Reeds Creek Identity waiting for confirmation Red Bluff Police Officers responded Saturday afternoon to reports of an unre- sponsive man lying in Reeds Creek just north of Jackson Street, according to a press release issued by the department.
