"We should all consider each other as human beings, and we should respect each other." ~Malala Yousafzai As a ten-year resident of Quartzsite, I have seen a lot of change in town. In the last four years in particular, improvements in the appearance of town proper- ties and personal properties has oc- curred. The governing body of the Town of Quartzsite has provided an atmosphere of excitement around seeing the possibility of establishing businesses in our town and buying person property as well. Upgrading the utilities has been a major addition to the list of things people and business entities look for in deciding to purchase and par- ticipate in a community. It has been exciting for me to help in the effort to form a vision for our future and make preparations for growth. Change always spotlights shortcom- ings and failures, but also points out the possibilities for improvement and success in the process. I believe the growth of our busi- ness community and renewed in- terest in home buying in Quartzsite has been spurred by people seeing these possibilities. I am asking to be elected to the 2-year seat on Town Council to continue my effort to be infl uential in the decisions we make as a community to move into a fu- ture bright with opportunity for our residents, old and new. Remember to vote in the General Election, Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020. The local voting center is lo- cated at the Quartzsite Senior Cen- ter, 40 Moon Mountain Ave. Karey Amon Quartzsite resident and Incumbent Council Member These are wise words from Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani blogger who survived being shot by the Tal- iban and became the youngest win- ner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The recent spread of the corona- virus at the White House seems to be the hot topic of the day. We are blessed in Quartzsite to have had few cases and I hope we keep it that way. As we welcome our snowbirds back to their favorite nesting spots, let us be ever mindful to be respect- ful towards one another. However this virus also deserves our respect. BCBSAZ Chief Medical Offi cer James Napoli, M.D. explains, "Basi- cally, it's a way of reminding people that COVID-19 can be very serious and we need to take every precau- tion to protect ourselves and others from it. The coronavirus is a world- wide pandemic and we all need to do our part to mitigate its spread." No person, young or old, is ex- pendable. This virus is not fair and does not care your age, sex, or which political party you belong. COVID- 19 seems to be carrying a roughly two percent mortality rate, which means that about one in every 50 infected people will die from it. If ever there were a time to heed the advice of experts, surely this is it. Many local businesses are taking a pledge to be "COVID-19 Safe" and are asking you to do the same while shopping in Quartzsite. Dr. Napoli said, "We can all play a role in protecting ourselves and others: Wear a mask properly when you're out in public, stay six feet away from other people when you leave your home, wash your hands and clean high-touch surfaces fre- quently, avoid crowds, and remem- ber we all have a responsibility not just to protect ourselves, but also to protect our fellow Arizonans." Our personal responsibility to re- spect others and be considerate in our actions has never been greater. My chances of getting infected are not solely based on my actions, but are also impacted by the behaviors of those around me. Wearing a mask not an impingement on one's free- dom as many have claimed an more than requiring shoes or shirts. So tell the person you pass on the street, share an aisle with in the su- permarket that you respect them as a fellow human by wearing your face mask. Let's keep Quartzsite open!
