UNDER CONSTRUCTION 2 I n the midst of all the excitement surrounding the new Chapter House, we've fielded some questions from Fraters about different facets of the project. While we can't wait until you see Epsilon's new home in person, here's a breakdown of the special new Chapter House that Iowa State Tekes will soon call home. THE NEW ADDITION 2.0 This part of the Chapter House, originally built in 1964, is being completely rebuilt from the ground up. To say that this part of the house has been a maintenance nightmare over the years is an under exaggeration. Frater Dan Schmidt '75 E-1197 has volunteered much of his time and energy in keeping the whole house functional and safe, especially the new addition, so it was only fitting that his company, Ames Trenching, get the opportunity to tear it down. The old addition didn't go down without a fight unfortunately. The entire air conditioning system had to be completely disconnected, a water line burst, and a strand of 12 tiny fiber optic wires was accidentally severed, rendering the undergraduate men without internet for almost two weeks. It has been a lively semester for these men, but in typical TKE fashion, they have persevered and will never forget living through the changes. MOM SANDY'S NEW APARTMENT, NEW FIRST FLOOR STUDENT ROOMS, AND NEW STUDY SPACES Mom Sandy's apartment is being moved to the west side of the main floor where Spike's library used to sit (on the far east side of the living room). So far, this space has been completely framed for Mom Sandy's new living quarters and is in the process of getting some major mechanical work done. The first floor will be gaining occupancy for four new undergraduates, which will be built on top of the new addition. The new study spaces include a new location for the Kratochvil library (roughly Mom Sandy's current apartment location), a newly added Apollo Club room, and a newly refinished Kaser library. Each of these can begin once new addition has been framed. THIRD FLOOR "EYEBROW" DORMER Occupancy for five students is being added for the third floor "eyebrow" dormer on the west side of the third floor. Originally five single- occupancy rooms, half of the roof is being completely torn off and reframed to make each of them large enough for two. All of these rooms have been gutted and are ready to have their new roof lines reframed, one at a time. WHOLE HOME UPGRADES All the windows in the Chapter House are being replaced, heating and cooling is being upgraded, internet connectivity will be vastly improved throughout, all new LED lighting will be added, and many other finishes will be upgraded throughout the home. Henkel has replaced most of the windows at this point and hopes to have them all installed before the end of fall. A Breakdown of What Epsilon Is Building Left: The old new addition gets demolished with the start of the footings being torn out. Middle: The old new addition in the process of demolition. Right: This space, sitting on top of the old new addition, was originally built as a cold air in 1964, then remodeled into student bedrooms in 2003. It will be the location of the new student rooms on the first floor. Left: Mom's new apartment, previously Kratochvil library, in the process of being framed. Middle: The third floor single-occupancy rooms completely gutted. Right: Looking down the fully gutted future "eyebrow" dormer.
