The three members of the West Hills College Coalinga rodeo teams will travel to Casper, Wyo. in June. Meroshnekoff will be joined by Kenzie Williams and Jose Machado. The three led competitors from the colleges that make up the West Coast Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, including larger schools from California and Nevada. Meroshnekoff and Machado are members of the men's team at WHCC; Williams is on the women's team. The two men, both freshmen, compete together in the Team Roping event; Meroshnekoff ropes the heels, Machado the head. In addition, Meroshnekoff competes in other events, including Bareback and Bull Riding and was the points leader in the coveted Men1s AllAround competition. He was also named Rookie of the Year. They came back from the final rodeo of the season at University of Nevada, Las Vegas on April 27 with a pickup truck full of custom-made saddles in recognition of their achievements during a season that began last fall; Meroshnekoff has four of them, the other two have one each. Coach Bruce Hunt likes their chances in Wyoming. "I am optimistic," he said. "Everyone starts equal so the National Championship is the line. Each one is capable of attaining greatness so consistency will play a major role as they compete three times and then the top twelve compete a fourth time in the final event. Casey has already won two National Championships in high school rodeo, which should give him an edge. Nonetheless this is the National Finals where nerves play a role and controlling your emotions is critical. We will work on this aspect, we'll be fine." What brought the trio to West Hills? "Bruce," they all said in unison, referring to Hunt who has coached rodeo at WHCC for the past 30 years and built a reputation in college rodeo circles. And each started rodeo competition at a young age. They stay in shape by being active. "We practice three or four hours a day, Monday through Thursday, all year," said Machado, whose goal is to turn pro. Williams said rodeo conditioning is unique in her sport. "We're not like other athletes. It's not just us. We have horses we have to keep in shape, too." They're all looking forward to Casper and the national finals. "We really did well in Las Vegas," Meroshnekoff said. "It was one of our best team performances all year." Casey beat out Tyler Mitchell from UNLV for the All-Around Cowboy honor. The Casper event is the 65th annual CNFR competition and will attract 400 cowboys and cowgirls from more than 100 colleges and universities. The top three riders and top two teams in each region of the country will compete from June 9-15. Couples, Montgomerie among 5 inducted to hall ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (AP) — About the only thing Fred Couples and Colin Montgomerie had in common was a golf swing good enough to trust for a lifetime. Couples became the first American to reach No. 1 in the world and won the Masters by a blade of grass that kept his ball from trickling into Rae's Creek. Montgomerie found fame on the European Tour, where he won the Order of Merit a record seven times in a row, though he never won a major, a glaring hole in his credentials. Couples sauntered down the fairways, the essence of cool. Montgomerie walked with his head down, so intense he never looked like he was having much fun. They shared the stage Monday night when both were inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, along with three others in the Class of 2013. The others were former U.S. Open champion and broadcaster Ken Venturi, former European Tour executive director Ken Schofield and twotime British Open champion and architect Willie Park Jr. That brings the Hall of Fame to 146 members. Couples talked about his childhood in Seattle, when his mother gave him $5 a day in the summer to play at Jefferson Park. He couldn't afford to buy a glove, and Couples still plays without one. He got choked up when he mentioned watching a PGA Tour player to put on a clinic in town when Couples was 14. ''I wasn't really the person who said, 'That's what I want to do, I'm going to be a PGA Tour player.' But I knew I wanted to really, really get involved in golf,'' Couples said. ''And the gentleman's name was Lee Trevino, who has been a mentor and someone I love.'' Couples didn't look at his notes or used the teleprompter in the back of the room. He rambled at times, as he always does, talking about his journey from Seattle to the University of Houston, where he first met CBS announcer Jim Nantz, turned pro and won 15 times, including that 1992 Masters and the green jacket ceremony in Butler Cabin with Nantz. They had rehearsed that moment in college. He was overcome with emotion at the end of the night, reading two sentences from a piece of paper. ''Thanks for taking a kid from Seattle and putting him in the Hall of Fame,'' Couples said as his chin buckled. ''This is the coolest night of my life.''
