Too often, women put their own health needs aside to focus on others and don't seek help until there is a problem. Being proactive with your health can keep you at your best. Washington Regional's HerHealth Clinic provides compassionate, personalized care for women of all ages, including gynecological exams, prenatal care and deliveries, infertility treatments and more. HerHealth Clinic has two locations offering care for women, by women at the Washington Regional Women and Infants Center in Fayetteville and the Springdale Center for Health in Har-Ber Meadows. The OB/GYNs at Washington Regional HerHealth Clinic offer five simple steps you can take to help stay healthy. First, schedule a well woman visit. A well woman visit focuses on preventive care and is a time for you and your provider to review your medical history, talk about any current health issues, identify issues that could become a problem in the future and find ways to prevent them. Your well woman visit may include a breast and pelvic exam, and a pap smear if needed. Your physician can also discuss options for birth control, if desired, and schedule follow up appointments to address any concerns. Second, know your numbers. The American Heart Association recommends that all women know their total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help you better understand your risk for certain conditions. Schedule a visit with your primary care provider for tests or screenings to learn your numbers. Your doctor or nurse can also provide you with information to help improve your numbers if needed. Focus on nutrition. Try incorporating a non-inflammatory diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, into your daily routine. Up your intake of veggies, fruits, whole grains, nuts, fish and poultry while limiting cheese, fried food, fast food and sugary treats. Next, exercise more. If you already have a workout routine, keep up the good work! If not, now is the time to start. Fitness doesn't always have to mean a trip to the gym. Start by taking a walk after meals. Even a 15-minute walk can help boost your metabolism, improve brain function and lower blood pressure. Or try yoga or cycling. The key is to get moving! Lastly, make sure you are getting quality sleep. Sleep is important for both a healthy body and a healthy mind. On average, adults need at least seven hours of sleep. To help get the best sleep possible, experts recommend switching off your phone, laptop and tv at least an hour before bed. Create a bedtime routine, such as taking a warm bath. And try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up around the same time each day. Make your health a priority and schedule a well woman visit.
