18 PREP RALLY: CLASS 6A | 8.30.2020 Sisco Funal Chapel 705 W. Meadow • Springdale, AR 479-751-4577 • www.siscofuneral.com Good Luck Teams! SHINE ON Young ready to put own stamp on Greenwood program GRAHAM THOMAS NWA DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE The old saying in sports goes that it's better to be the coach that replaces the coach that replaced a legend. Chris Young chuckled at the thought, but replacing a legend is just what he's doing at Greenwood. For the first time in 16 years, the Bulldogs are under new leadership after coach Rick Jones resigned for a coaching position at the University of Missouri. Jones led Greenwood to a 185-26 record, 12 conference championships and eight state titles in 16 seasons. Young, an assistant coach for 20 years at Greenwood, including the last 11 as offensive coordinator, was named head coach. "I'm thrilled to have been here a long time," Young said. "It's hard enough to replace coach Jones. The kids have been great. The transition has been smooth. We're certainly not looking to reinvent anything. I was blessed to be an assistant and coordinator for coach Jones for 16 years. Most of the things I've learned in coaching have come from being around him." Greenwood (10-2 in 2019) once again returns a solid team that's expected to contend in Class 6A. The Bulldogs finished second in the 6A-West Conference last year behind state finalist Benton, which defeated Greenwood 45-38 at Benton. Greenwood saw its season end in the state semifinals with a 50-38 loss to eventual state champion Searcy.
