THE SKINNY The Dragons managed to not only make the playoffs but win a game in the postseason despite losing their starting quarterback to a season-ending knee injury in the opener. … Junior Gus Newton saw action late in the season at quarterback and will head into preseason practice as the starter since returning starter Ethan Gregory decided not to return to the team after his injury and instead concentrate on basketball. … Dragons coach Tom Harrell compared Newton to Malachi West, another big, physical runner who was pressed into playing some quarterback last season after Gregory's injury. … Harrell begins his 34th season at Mountainburg and 31st as head coach, but he's seen numbers dip in this year of the pandemic. The team's roster has gone from 31 or 32 a year ago down to less than 20 with several parents choosing the virtual route for school, Harrell said. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "With a lot of our kids going virtual, our numbers have gone way down. We have very little depth. We started with 31 or 32 kids and now we're down to like 18. I'm not sure what we're going to do." — Tom Harrell, Mountainburg coach SCHEDULE Sept. 4 .... Cedarville Oct. 9 ................. Bigelow* Sept. 11 .. He replaces Doug Powell, last season's 2A-4 coach of the year, who left for Waldron. … Kobe Faughn earned all-state honors rushing for 600 yards as a backup and finishing with 74 tackles as a linebacker. Faughn also finished with 10.5 tackles for a loss, had an interception, forced five fumbles and made three fumble recoveries, returning one for a touchdown. … Tatum Scott ran for 716 yards and 14 touchdowns a season ago from the quarterback position. Defensively, he had a team-high six interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, and also had four pass break-ups. … Scott hasn't been asked to throw the ball a lot in his career, but that could change this season and he is ready to do it, Chambers says. … Chambers feels he lost a couple players this summer because of the lack of a full offseason. … Program lost one all-state player and five all-conference players from last year's conference championship team. … Magazine had its season end to eventual 2A champion Fordyce in the second round of the playoffs last fall. … Because of scheduling difficulties, Magazine will play Lamar's JV team in non-conference play. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "We had some good years then we dropped off a little bit. It has been a perfect storm building up to what this program was able to do last year. That group coming up we knew would be special. They won some big games two seasons ago but really broke through last season. We now feel like we have a target on our backs. Our seniors know they have to step up to fill some big shoes that were lost. We'd like to get a conference championship and get past that second-round playoff wall we've hit." — Ryan Chambers, Magazine coach SCHEDULE Aug. 28 ..... THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "We had a lot of young players play for us and get experience. Our numbers were not good last year. We dressed out 16 players two games in a row last year. That isn't enough for 8-man football. They fought all year. This year we are looking at 32 kids playing for us. That is going to give us some hope along with moving up 15-16 kids from the 9-0 JV team we had last year. Some of those kids will have to start. Our juniors look to be a strong class for us. With how much they had to play last year, they almost feel like seniors already. THE SKINNY The Rebels hope to make the most of an odd scheduling quirk that has the team playing six home games this season. Like most teams, because of COVID-19 implications, there's a lot of things off the field to be determined. … Second-year coach Joseph Morse hopes an experienced offensive line will provide some depth. The Rebels started five sophomores on the offensive line last season, four of whom return in 2020. Junior Cody Keech returns under center. … Senior RB James Linton amassed 1,041 total yards last season, running for five touchdowns and catching a pair of TDs. … Speedy Peyton Chrisman led the Rebels with 43 receptions for 488 yards and five TDs in 2019. An all-around athlete, Chrisman will slide over as the team's QB. … Morse, an Alma native who earned his degree at Arkansas Tech, is 2-18 in two previous seasons as the head coach — a 1-9 campaign at Marshall and last season's 1-9 stint at JCW. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "We have to get out of our own way. We have seniors that care about the program that wants us to be good. One thing they've talked about is not having a different coach.
