Junior running back/ outside linebacker Caleb Matthews is back after spending one year at a high school in Missouri. Matthews is expected to receive at least half of the carries at running back for the Wolves. THE SKINNY Dalton Curtis, a WR last fall, and Brandon Scott, who guided the 9-1 JV team at QB, competed to trigger the spread offense attack at the QB position. … Both options at QB give the team an extra dynamic of a rushing QB threat it didn't have last year. … Coach Ricky May feels the overall team speed is at a higher level this season. … Breckon Ketter returns after finishing with a team-high 635 yards on the ground on 150 touches with four touchdowns last fall. He also finished with 51 total tackles. … Kaleb Hamby had four interceptions on defense and 21 catches for 294 yards and two touchdowns on offense last year. … Charleston had its first losing season since 1985 last fall after being decimated by injuries. The Tigers were down nine starters and a backup two games into the season. … Program rallied under first-year coach Ricky May after a 0-3 start to maintain its 32-season consecutive playoff appearance streak, the longest active in the state. … Younger players who were pressed into action last year looking to make an impact now as starters, May says. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "We were snakebit last year with injuries. The kids played really hard. They learned a lot from the adversity we were in early a year ago. The injuries didn't help us at all last year, but they are going to help us this year with those guys who stepped up getting experience. THE SKINNY Doc Crowley, the team's offensive coordinator for the last seven seasons, now steps up to be the head coach. He replaces the retiring Scott Hyatt who in 13 years had a 123-36 record and guided the team to two state titles. … Program moving from the 3A-1 Conference to the 3A-4 Conference after three consecutive conference titles. … Booneville switched its offense to a flexbone over the wing-T in the offseason. Crowley feels the new scheme will give the program an edge in the future when not blessed with talent. … Randon Ray makes the transition from running back to quarterback after running for 1,000 yards on 130 carries with 16 touchdowns last fall. … Ray continues the family football excellence for the Bearcat program, as he is the fourth family member to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. … The staff loves the passion it sees from Ray, who arrives to practice even before the coaches sometimes. … Top backfield options Ty Goff, Colten Ritchie, Chance Broussard, Rocky Ross and Brooks Herrera look to step up after 64 percent of rushing yards from last year graduated. … Coaching staff feels it still has some question marks upfront on both sides of the ball to figure out. … Wooldridge returns at linebacker to help lead the defense after finishing with 76 tackles. … The Bearcats carry a 24-game conference winning streak into the season. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "I've been here for 11 years now and the kids know what to expect of me and the kids grow up in the program and know what the program is all about. We have four of our seven coaches on staff that played and graduated from here. People love this program and want to help it out as much as they can. THE SKINNY Paris moves from the 3A-1 Conference to the 3A-4 Conference. … Coaching staff is looking for a big year from QB Chase Watts who took his lumps as a sophomore but the game has slowed down for him with a year of varsity experience, coach Tyler Clark says. … Team strength will be on the line with having four players being at least 6-2, 250. … Ely Fore had a strong offseason and looks to make a big impact at RB. It is his time to shine, says Clark. … Wideouts Blake Martines and Keller Keen are speedy and look to take the top off defenses. … About 70 percent of the starters last year were sophomores now looking to make impacts as juniors with added experience. … Program was winless in 2018 but rallied to win three games in 2019. … Team felt they gave some games away with turnovers last fall and hope to protect the ball more this season. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "It was nice to go from 0 wins to 3 wins. But we've talked to our kids that we need to be pleased with the progress but not happy with the result. Three wins was nice, but that isn't what anybody is after either. We are a better football team than that. If we get to play an entire season, we expect to be better.
