4A Daily News – Saturday, May 4, 2013 Agriculture farm & ranch Bill Borror celebrates milestone We had the first smoky skies on May 1 when the Cedar and Panther fires near Butte Meadows burned. Afraid we will have many more smoky skies this year. As of Friday morning the Panther fire was 10,000 acres in the Ishi Wilderness Area. And the north wind still blows. *** I was privileged to be part of the family when Bill Borror celebrated his 80th birthday on Monday, April 29 with his family. Aaron and Rebecca had come from their 9 Peaks Ranch in Oregon, Alda had flown in from Japan, while Kevin and Linda, Eric and Karen were nearby. The grandchildren, Bryce and Erin, Callie from Williams and Rochelle from Oregon were present too. Dale and Inez Borror moved to Tehama County with their children Bill and Merna in 1948. They purchased the A. T. Spencer ranch in Gerber where the Romeldale breed of sheep was developed. Romeldales were quite prominent in the United States in late 1930s and early '40s. The barn where the first Romeldales were born still stands at the ranch headquarters. "Bill worked on the family beef ranch until going off to college, UC-Davis, and later serving a stint in the U.S.Army. He returned to the family ranch with his wife, Sandy, where they started their own family and continued to gain steam in the Angus business. "Many of his peers in the ranching business agree that Bill was always ahead of his time in regards to beef cattle genetics. While expected progeny differences (EPDs) didn't officially come about until the late 1970s, in the 1950s, Bill recorded the birth weights, weaning weights and yearling weights of the first breeding bulls he ever sold. "Similarly, artificial insemination was not widely used in beef cattle until the late 1980s, but has been heavily used at TAR since the early 60s. Such practices are a testament to Bill's foresight as such recordkeeping and practices are essential to any successful program in today's cattle business." — California Cattleman, July/August 2012. In 2009 Bill was recognized with the prestigious California Chamber of Commerce Livestock Man of the Year award. This award recognizes Bill Borror's contributions to the genetic improvement of the Angus breed plus outstanding service and leadership in California's livestock industry and the business community, at the local, state and federal levels. Tehama Angus Ranch has been recognized for having cattle meet Pathfinder status every year by the American Angus Association. Borror received the American Angus Heritage Foundation Award for his contributions to the Angus Breed. Bill has been president of the American Angus Association, with membership of 30,000.
