Kappa Alpha Chapter of Kappa Delta at Florida State University • Fall 2020 Always Think of KD Landis Gallman—20 Years with Kappa Alpha! I t's hard to believe, but this summer marks 20 years that Kappa Alpha Chapter of Kappa Delta House Director Landis Gallman has been in our lives. Twenty years of councils, recruitment teams, pledge classes, and sisters who have learned from, and been guided by, her leadership. Meal and event planning while working within a budget are in her job description, but Landis makes the transition from House Director to "Mom" in a quick heartbeat. While trying to balance the "home away from home tough love," Landis has been a mom to so many. In 20 years, the Chapter has grown from 150 to 250 women. Landis has guided us through major house renovations that include creating a grand southern column entrance, overseeing the removal of outside walls, a total kitchen upgrade, and a well-deserved Mom Suite. We'd be remiss not to mention the routine, year-round house maintenance and summer projects, including coming back to busted pipes and clogged air conditioner drain pans. Landis is a construction project manager for the House Corporation, contractors, painters, and her staff. KD is the only Florida State sorority to have the same House Director for 20 years, along with a longtime, dedicated staff that has stayed with her most of those years. We've all become better project managers and event planners under Landis' watchful eye. 2020 has been one for the record books with the new normal requiring a safer way to live at 555 West Jefferson. e Chapter House closed in March, not to be re-opened until August. is entire time, Landis has stayed at the house to oversee decontamination and implementation of the social distancing set up. She has assured plenty of PPE for our sisters and worked with the Chapter President, Recruitment Chairman, and House Manager on new recruitment needs, move out/in, and meal schedules. Landis has tuned in to National Kappa Delta, insurance company, and alumni relations webinars with us to learn everything possible about providing a safe home environment. While getting all these things done, Landis has personally touched so many of us with her love, her flowers, her KD cookies, her like-home decorations, Parents Weekends, late-night talks, and boyfriend break- ups and make-ups. We all have our Landis memories and use her lessons in our everyday lives. It's so special to have shared our kids with her and watch her become GRANDLaLa to Harvey and Louis. ank you, House Mom Extraordinaire Landis Gallman! We love you and thank you for 20 great years! "Landis Gallman is the superwoman of all housemothers. She goes above and beyond for our sisters and the Kappa Delta sorority. Some of my fondest memories while living in the Chapter House include spending hours in her room sharing stories and planning special events. Landis is someone who brings people together. Her warm heart, kindness, and fierce love for the sisters of Kappa Alpha Chapter remind us that we always have a home at 555 W. Jefferson."—Sarah Manning '15, Chapter President 2017-18 "In one instant, Florida State recruitment was changed when Landis Gallman arrived on campus. She collaborated with the Recruitment Chairman on colors, flowers, and outfits. Now, you know it's something when young college freshmen are talking about how beautiful the flowers are! e other sororities were so envious that they hired professional florists to do their arrangements. Next was our famous Parents Weekend where parents from other sororities wanted to come to KD because of our status as the best on campus. Landis started decorating for the Florida State versus Florida rivalry game. Even Gator fans had to laugh at the Grinch. Landis has worked diligently to keep KD at the top! She is always available to actives and alumnae. She never gave birth to a daughter, but she has about 1,000 and counting now."—Crystle Johnson May '76 "My mother taught me the importance of finding humor in all aspects of life, especially the difficult ones. No matter what, we always have laughter. I love you, Mom!" —Landon McMahon, Landis' son Landis Gallman with her son, Landon McMahon, at his wedding.
