PAGE 3 UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA A fter transferring from Stephens College to the University of Oklahoma before her sophomore year, Mary Frances McCasland Michaelis '50 was inspired to pledge Tri Delta because of her family's history with the sorority. Her first family member to become part of the sisterhood was Naomi McCasland Burton who pledged in 1914; that's over 100 years of Tri Delta traditions! "Naomi was also from Duncan and remained very active in the Oklahoma City Alumnae Association for many years," Mary Frances said. Mary Frances began her college career at Stephens College, an all-women's school, at the advice of her family. "They wanted me to become more 'polished' like the city girls before coming to Oklahoma," Mary Frances said. "This was very common for girls like me from small towns at the time." After joining Theta Gamma Chapter, she lived in the house on 700 Elm Street for three years. Mary Frances remembers dancing with her sisters at live music events in the student union ballroom. Her favorite memories often came from blind dates where Tri Delta would match with one of the fraternities on campus for a huge blind date. "I made so many wonderful lifelong friendships with my sisters," Mary Frances said. "We had around 28 girls in my pledge class, and I am still close with many of them today." The Tri Delta family tradition did not stop with Mary Frances. Years later, her daughters and two of her granddaughters joined the sisterhood as well. "I am so happy to be able to share that part of my life with them," Mary Frances said. "It's something special that gives us all another connection to one another." Today, Mary Frances lives in Duncan, Oklahoma.
