Hudson plays a careless playboy who tries to make it up to a widow (Jane Wyman) for his multiple, accidental misdeeds against her. "All That Heaven Allows" (1955): Reteamed with Jane Wyman, Hudson again was her leading man in this tale of a rich widow whose friends and children frown upon her relationship with a younger man. "Giant" (1956) Hudson meets a ... well, giant acting challenge with excellence in Oscar- winning director George Stevens' version of the Edna Ferber novel, casting the actor as a wealthy Texas rancher mired in family complications and struggles with a rival. "Written on the Wind" (1956) Hudson plays the object of affection of a vice-ridden heiress (Oscar winner Dorothy Malone), but he has feelings for her equally reckless brother's (Robert Stack) wife (Lauren Bacall). "A Farewell to Arms" (1957) David O. Selznick produced this take on the much-filmed Ernest Hemingway novel, with Hudson playing an American soldier who falls for the nurse who tends to him (Jennifer Jones) during World War I. "Pillow Talk" (1959) An Oscar-winning screenplay fuels the first of the three hugely popular teamings of Hudson and Doris Day, cast here as two vastly different people sharing a telephone party line.
