I should add that I am rarely included in anything the rest of the family does, and I worry that if I miss this event, I will never be included in anything again. — Little Sis Dear Sis: Call your brother and let him know you have a conflict. Tell him you are heartbroken to miss his party and wish you could find a way out of your nonrefundable reservations, but it's not possible. Then send him a lovely wedding gift to make up for your absence. These things happen. There's nothing more you can do. Dear Annie: This is for ''N.N.,'' whose husband is depressed. Please tell her to have him tested for celiac disease. Depression is one of the symptoms. My husband was depressed for a long period of time and even threatened to take his life. We were finally able to determine that he had celiac disease. Doctors are not that familiar with the symptoms. — Betty Kelly-Griggs house fence and gazebo In July, 1977, the Tehama County Board of Supervisors gave the KellyGriggs House Museum Association permission to remove iron bars from windows and cellblocks of the old Tehama County Jail which was set for demolition. Clint Casebier was appointed agent for the Museum Association in the selection and removal of iron bars to be used for "a fence to be constructed around the museum property at 311 Washington Street." Passersby were intrigued watching Casebier cut out jail bars with a blowtorch, prompting questions like "Are you trying to get in or out?" or, "Isn't there an easier way?" After weeks of work, the assortment of harvested iron bars and sections lay stacked in a huge pile at the rear of the museum. Casebier began the lengthy and labor intensive process of cutting and welding each bar to the appropriate length. Hollow, square iron posts were installed along the fence line to anchor each section. There was enough salvaged iron to enclose the Washington and Ash Street bordering grounds as well as a portion of the northeast side; the remainder was completed with wide boards. Two massive gates were installed supported by reconstructed original cellblock door hinges made to swing easily with the nudge of just one finger; designed to match the curved tops of the museum windows. By the summer Ice Cream Social of 1982, the fence was nearing completion. The Fred G. Godbolt Memorial Gazebo was constructed in 1982, in honor of the charter member and first president of the Kelly-Griggs House Museum Association. The circular brick patio under the gazebo was designed and constructed by the "Tehama Fly Fishers," of which Dr. Godbolt was also a charter member. A grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, Inc. was presented by then Daily News General Manager Jim Dimmitt to provide necessary funds. Reynolds' Donrey Media Group owned the newspaper at the time. A few years later, Bob Grootveld, former museum director, added Victorian embellishments. From ball and spindle trim donated to the museum from the gable roof of a 1880s Jefferson Street home, he fashioned gingerbread trim to match pieces already in place over the entrance. In 2009, the gazebo received a new roof and fresh paint with the help of several volunteers and donations from "Hinkle Roofing" and "Moule's Paint & Glass" in Grass Valley. For many years the "Tehama County Band" and other fine entertainers have performed under the gazebo for the pleasure of summer Ice Cream Social attendees. This year's event will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, August 18. Watch for further details. Appraisal Day with John Humphries is coming 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 22 at 311 Washington St. Cost is $5 each appraisal of carry-in items only. Sessions are limited to four items at a time; seating available; no reservations. Proceeds benefit the museum's foundation restoration project. Students learn a variety of defensive techniques including from when they are either pushed or shoved down to the ground, how to be in a heightened state of awareness during vulnerable moments such as walking to their vehicles after work, coming out of a store during times of low lighting and arriving home late at night. They learn that their first line of defense is being aware of one's surroundings and to look for things that either don't look right or just out of place. "My mind is my best weapon," has become the motto for this class. Students also learn to be able to recognize what is available as a possible weapon or tool in their survival. These may include but are not limited to a towel, belt, rope, hat or any other piece of clothing, items in a purse or pocket book, a newspaper or even a bottle of water. They also learn about how to use an elbow, fingers, open hand, or a knee as a defensive tool and how to recognize vulnerable targets on an attacker such as an eye, an ear, the nose, and how to twist arms, shoulders, elbows and wrists as well as using many other parts of the human anatomy against their attacker. These techniques come from various ancient arts such as Jujutsu, Aiki-jutsu, Kempo-jutsu and an art known as Kobujutsu (ancient to modern weapons). Students who depend on a cane can learn how to use it as a defensive tool in their defense. Students are not required to jump right into a vigorous workout. They're encouraged to stay limber and as fit as possible but nearly anyone can learn a few techniques that will help them to stay safer in today's environment. These classes were proposed by Alternatives to Violence to the Police Activities League Martial Arts Program in November and began in January. The Martial Arts Program began in 1998 as an alternative to bullying and violence for school age children from age four through the completion of high school. PAL is a long-term mentoring program. All PAL programs are free. The adult classes are held each Wednesday 5:30-7 p.m. and are free to anyone who feels vulnerable to violence, including bullying. Youth classes are held each Monday and Thursday 3-5 p.m. Classes are always close to maximum capacity so please call the program coordinator at 200-1031 for more information. For more information on PAL programs visit www.tehamaso.org or call (530) 529-7950. For more information on the Martial Arts program either email the instructor at usmcmike3zero@sbcglobal.net or call (530) 8400345.
