4A Daily News – Friday, May 3, 2013 Education in Tehama County KEEP ON LEARNING Students visit Simpson University campus Nasise among first nursing graduates REDDING – Simpson University honored 214 graduates during its outdoor spring commencement on campus April 27. Among those are 20 men and women making history as the university's founding class of nursing students, including Red Bluff resident Laura Nasise. Those students received their nursing pins at a special ceremony April 25. In 2011, Simpson launched a four-year bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) program, expanding its nursing educational options, which include a 16-month RN-to-BSN Track through the School of Continuing Studies. The program is bursting at the seams, with more than 80 students this semester and more than 90 expected in spring 2014. Plans are underway for a state-of the-art Science and Nursing Building to be constructed near the center of campus for projected occupancy in fall 2014. This year's founding class of graduates includes 18 women and two men, most between the ages of 18 and 25. The majority is from Shasta County, and several are married. They hope to serve in a variety of settings, including trauma centers, community hospitals, and in overseas missions. Nasise said being part of Simpson's nursing program has been one of the best experiences of her life. "My classmates have become part of my family," she said. "Simpson University has not only given me an excellent nursing education, but they have nurtured my spiritual being as well." The BSN program prepares students to take the registered nursing exam for California licensure. The day included a campus tour, information session and lunch in the dining center. "Getting students on a college campus increases their chances of furthering their education," said Tonya Moore, parent and Simpson Regional Advancement representative. Simpson supports the Expect More Tehama movement and welcomes students and parents to schedule a campus visit, which take place every Friday. Red Bluff Rotary and the Tehama Reads organization recently installed a bookshelf full of books for kids in the pediatrics department at Lassen Medical Group. To stock the bookshelf, Red Bluff Rotary funded the purchase of $800 worth of used children's books to supplement books received from local donations.
