"Red River" (1948) A rancher and his adopted son (John Wayne, Montgomery Clift) clash over the execution of a cattle drive in director Howard Hawks' genre great. "Winchester '73" (1950) James Stewart is the star of this classic that involves the title rifle, but the picture also is worth watching for early performances by Rock Hudson, "Anthony" (later "Tony") Curtis and Shelley Winters. "High Noon" (1952) A lawman reluctantly readies for a showdown in this seminal Western that brought star Gary Cooper an Oscar. "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" (1957) There's star power to spare as Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas play Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday in this re-creation of an Old West legend. "The Magnificent Seven" (1960) Director John Sturges' revision of Japan's "Seven Samurai" casts Yul Brynner as the leader of a specially skilled septet defending Mexican villagers against bandits.
