The Beach Comes to Fayetteville at Shag Workshop by ASHLEY YOUNG Ah, Summer! Nothing says it better than the sounds of beach music, good friends, great dancing and cold drinks. And, if you live in the Fayetteville area, you aren’t going to have to travel far to join in the fun. Shaggers, take out your dancing shoes and get ready for a Summer Workshop Party at the Fayetteville Holiday Inn Bordeaux. This year’s Summer Workshop Party will be hosted by the Fayetteville Area Shag Association (FASA) July 9-11. This “park and party” workshop will include a hospitality room with refreshments and drinks, shag and dance lessons, entertainment, vendors and door prizes like a watch or television. The Holiday Inn Bordeaux will provide a 2,040 square foot ballroom dance fl oor for shaggers anytime they want to dance during the workshop. This is the fi rst time that the Summer Workshop Party has been held at the Holiday Inn Bordeaux. “We call it a workshop, but really it’s a big party with 100 shag clubs,” said Kathi Baloyot, of the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs. Tickets are $65 for all events and registration can be made at the door or by going online www.shagdance.com/ summerwork.htm. Registration begins at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 9 and at 9 a.m. on July 10. Reservations to stay at the hotel can be made by calling the Holiday Inn Bordeaux, at (910)323-0111, and mentioning the shag workshop. Participants must be 21 years or older to register because alcoholic beverages will be served. To date, 300 shaggers have already registered and the FASA is hoping for 400 people by the closing day of registration. This summer workshop is one of fi ve meetings the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs holds annually. More than 100 shag clubs are usually present and attendance by at least two representatives from each club is required. However, all shaggers are invited to come out and have a good time. Disc jockeys for the event will include Tootie Brown, David Sessions, “Big” Al Pearce, Ricky Price and Murl Augustine. “FASA was formed in 1984 with the purpose of perpetuating and preserving the Carolina Shag dance, to promote beach music and the atmosphere surrounding the dance, and to create and maintain an environment conducive to the dance,” said Baloyot. FASA is a part of the Association of The beach is coming to Fayetteville with the Fayetteville Area Shag Association’s Summer Workshop. Carolina Shag Clubs, which was established in February 1984. The founders did not name the club based on location, but rather the Carolinas’ style of dancing. Life and Faith Tour Makes a Stop In Rockingham a STAFF REPORT In its debut year, the Life & Faith Tour will make a stop in Rockingham on July 10. The day-long festival has a diverse lineup of musicians, authors, comedians, motivational speakers and more. But it doesn’t just stop at entertainment. It’s a chance for attendees to give back to their community. The Life & Faith Tour is a Christian festival with a major fundraising component to benefi t the local community, born out of the simple desire to give back and leave a community in better shape than it was when they arrived. Created years ago by former fi reman Ronnie Jackson, as an initial fundraiser for the local fi re department in Kenbridge, VA, what started out as a cookout with local entertainment grew into a major fundraising event with headlining acts such as Travis Tritt and Alabama. Today, more than 30 years later, the tour has MercyMe Aaron Shust Amy Grant Hawk Nelson Natalie Grant Shenandoah Diamond Rio Meredith Andrews David Crowder Band The Justin Tesenair Band Israel Houghton Point of Grace Chris Hendricks Veggie Tales Artists vary by location. Each Life & Faith venue can hold 70,000 people so a sellout crowd would leave that community with $700,000 as the tour busses pull out of town. It is truly a remarkable way to give back to the community.” Compassion International is just one of the many sponsors that have climbed on board to help make this event possible. As a benefi ciary for the tour, it is an opportunity that not only raises funds for their own organization, but it also benefi ts others in the surrounding communities as well. For every 70k people who attend, the tour will provide the funds to build a Habitat of Humanity home in that state. If the ticket buyer doesn’t choose a benefi ciary, a default organization in each city will benefi t, ensuring that the community benefi ts from every ticket sold. Organizations will range from local churches and youth groups to the YMCA, Red Cross and other worthy civic groups. Churches and organizations are welcome to sign up as a benefi ciary at the Web site. “This is truly an effortless act, all organizations have to do is talk about the show, and then when a patron goes to buy a ticket, that organization gets $10 just for the referral,” Jackson explains. “However the churches and organizations must be registered on the tour’s Web site to become a benefi ciary. It’s the kind of event and life-changing day that will encourage you and your family, but it will also change the city you live in!” For organizations to register to become a benefi ciary and to view the full all-star lineup along with fi nding more information please visit www.lifeandfaithtour.com.
