J ack Hanchett '18 pledged Acacia in the fall 2018 pledge class, and it didn't take long for him to jump from his longtime Bloomington home to his new Third Street home. "I already knew about the fraternities on campus, of course, and I was pretty much aware of Acacia," Jack said. "If nothing else because my family would drive by to see the candy cane stripes on the pillars during the Christmas holiday." Last November, Jack was elected executive dean, a position that not every era of the Chapter had. Every other year, the executive dean helps organize materials for the upcoming Conclave. However, there are other duties, too, such as running the Judicial Board. "I'm responsible for ensuring all brothers comply with the Code of Conduct," Jack said, "a new bylaw we adopted last year. If any rules are broken the Judicial Board holds a hearing to better understand the situation. If needed we might impose work duties or human service hours or fines." Best memory as a pledge? "Definitely the 2018 Indiana University Dance Marathon, which benefits Riley's Children Hospital," Jack said. "My pledge class raised over $24,000 alone, and we were the only fraternity group at the event that stayed for the full 36 hours. It was super tiring, but extremely rewarding. And I felt that I became much closer with my pledge class after that weekend." Favorite space in the house? "Room 307, The Quad. My room is actually 306, but I am always hanging out in The Quad," Jack said. "We play euchre, watch sports, and discuss whatever is going on in our lives each day. The Quad is almost never empty, and I relish having a place to hang out with brothers almost anytime, day or night." You're Pythagoras with super powers, so what would you change about Indiana Acacia? "If I can help improve anything about the Chapter, I would work to improve our organization," Jack said. "We are pretty last- minute with most things. The new executive board [elected November 2019], however, I think has all the right pieces to become more organized." Major and plans post-undergraduate life? "Majoring in law and public policy right now out of the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs," Jack said. "I am aiming to continue my studies at SPEA in the masters of public policy program. I will then head on to a career in public policy."
