By Karen Rice e farm families profiled in this sec- tion represent the 49,346 farms, on the 14.5 million acres of workable farmland throughout Arkansas. Ninety-seven percent of Arkansas farms are fam- ily-owned. Some have been passed down for several generations and have been around for over 100 years. ese hard-working farm families and others like them feed our country and drive our economy. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one U.S. farm feeds 165 people annually. Yet, most people don't consider the farmer's crucial role in our culture. "e modern consumer is really dis- connected from the real source of their food," said Kevin Smith, President of the Benton County Farm Bureau. "A lot of people think their beef comes from the grocery store. ey believe that because they have become so separated from the farmer." We hope these stories serve to recon- nect the reader with the hard work and contributions of farm families in our community. Many work full-time jobs in addition to running the farm. Everyone in the family, down to the youngest members, helps shoulder the load to put food on our tables. eir livelihoods are dependent on elements, like the weather, over which they have no control. Government regulations and market prices directly affect their household incomes. eir dedication is tested at every turn. With increasing urbanization here in Northwest Arkansas, it becomes more difficult to visualize agriculture's role in our lives. But the impact of our local farm families extends far beyond the fields and farm stands. "A lot of people are not aware that Ben- ton County is one of the top fiy coun- ties in the United States for agriculture receipts, and number one in Arkansas." Kevin noted. In addition to providing nutrition that serves as the foundation for a healthy nation, agriculture's raw materials impact supply chains and demand for goods in other non-agricultural markets. A strong agriculture base influences other employment sectors like food manufacturing, biotechnolo- gy, hospitality, machinery building and more. Farming can pave the way for development, including roads, markets, shipping services and exporting. e family farm represents a powerful economic building block in Northwest Arkansas, the state and the nation. We're proud to support the local farm families whose contributions make all of our lives possible. We hope that their stories will inspire gratitude for their dedication and hard work and for the important part they play in our health and prosperity. Thanks to all the family farmers
