Chapter Officers ILLINOIS BETA CHAPTER G abriel Tumlos '13 and his pledge brothers decided to join Sigma Alpha Epsilon under truly unique circumstances: When their previous fraternity closed down, they decided to stick together and join Illinois Beta. As Gabe puts it, "One chapter ended, another one began." Illinois Beta helped him learn that life is about bringing people together, and that he has a talent for exactly that. After college, Gabe and some members of his class co-founded Mochi, a "remote-first" social club. The group has members in 11 countries and works together on building new skills and exploring their creative passions. Every now and then, they all meet in person, throw parties, and organize trips around the world. Gabe honed these people skills in ΣΑΕ, particularly during his time as Eminent Archon. "Fraternities, clubs—they're kind of the same thing if you think about it," he says. The biggest difference is having women as an equal part of his new community. "Life's a lot better that way, trust me." He last visited the chapter house on a recruitment trip and was pleased to see so many brothers working in the study room. If Gabe can communicate one thing to the active leadership, it's to hold the value of diversity in the highest regard. "Not only in race, but in academic and economic background," he explains. "Inclusion is an active process. We should strive to include people from all walks of life into our fraternity. You never know what you might learn from someone with a different perspective than yours." Thanks to his work, Gabe is in touch with ΣΑΕ brothers every day. In addition to brothers from his class and beyond, he is in periodic contact with Chapter Advisor Michael Morthland '12—"A True Gentleman to the core!" One of his favorite undergraduate memories is listening to music with a starlight projector dancing on the ceiling of his bedroom. "With my brothers, of course. Doesn't get much better than that." Gabe meditates daily, and in his spare time he enjoys writing stories, reading books, and collecting records. "When the time comes, come find me. The fraternity continues beyond these hallowed halls." Connect with Gabe at gabriel@mochi.game. Johnson '55 entered Chapter Eternal on April 24, 2019, after spending time with his beloved Patt around the kitchen table, enjoying each other and an evening nightcap. He was devoted family man, a successful businessman, and a recognized community leader. Bill graduated from Illini with his B.A. and later completed his master's degree in business from Stanford University. He was a first lieutenant and troop commander in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. In 1954, Bill married the love of his life, Patt. They had three children: Kristin, Sally and Steve. After serving his country, Bill started his career at Whirlpool Corporation as assistant advertising manager before being recruited to Heath Company, where he helped launch their national dealer program and the opening of the company's first of 100+ corporate owned stores. In 1968, Bill and Patt moved the family to California, where he worked for Columbia Broadcasting System as vice president of marketing for the Musical Instrument Division, which included Fender Guitars and Rogers Drums. This afforded Bill the opportunity to meet The Beatles, Sonny and Cher, The Smothers Brothers, Kenny Rogers, and numerous other interesting characters. He returned to St. Joseph and Heath Company in 1971, eventually being named president in 1981, and retiring in 1993. In 2012 Bill was presented with the Cornerstone Alliance David R. Whitwam Outstanding Achievement Award. He was also an active Rotarian, a Mason, and a prolific fundraiser for numerous charitable and faith-based organizations. He lived an incredible life and will be forever missed.
