B eing in the middle of three generations of Kappa Deltas has given Evie VanSant Mauldin '77 a great perspective on how our beloved sisterhood has shaped the lives of so many women. Evie and her sister, Martha VanSant Zuelke '78, were thankful to learn about KΔ's values of lifetime learning, personal integrity, altruistic service, and truth and loyalty from their mother, Betty Hurston VanSant, Sigma Lambda (Auburn University). Those core characteristics were then passed down to Evie's nieces, Elizabeth Zuelke, Alpha Delta (Rhodes College) '09, and Mary Hurston Zuelke, Epsilon Sigma (Wofford College) '13. Lifetime Learning While KΔ's values run through Evie's family, she is indebted to Zeta Chapter for surrounding her with sisters during a formative time of her life. "How could we possibly know when we are young college girls that our KΔ sisters will become some of our very best, lifelong friends?" Evie said. "As it turns out, by joining KΔ, I became associated with some of the finest women I have ever met in my life (and I know a lot of fine women)." Personal Integrity Evie encourages Zeta new members to hit the ground running and get involved within the Chapter so they can determine their strengths and hone them. "It is your like-minded friends who mold you," Evie said. "Living in the KΔ house with constant contact with good friends with integrity had a profound impact on me in a positive way." Altruistic Service Evie's sisters inspired her to be dedicated to serving others. Her role as General Counsel and Senior Vice President at Bank Independent has allowed Evie to do exactly that. "Every day in the legal department at Bank Independent, there are new issues and situations that need resolving," Evie said. "My work is fun, challenging, and rewarding." She also serves as a University of Alabama System trustee, which consumes a lot of her time. "Most folks don't realize the University of Alabama System is responsible for governance of the University of Alabama; the University of Alabama-Huntsville, UAB, and UAB Medicine (including UAB Hospital)," Evie said. "My fellow trustees are conscientious, committed, and caring. All 15 trustees take our stewardship of the University System seriously. The University System is the driver in improving the health, education, and economic status of all citizens of the state of Alabama. That is the focus and mission of the University of Alabama System." Truth and Loyalty Despite keeping busy with Bank Independent and the University of Alabama System, it's important to Evie to stay connected with those who pushed her to be successful. She'll always cherish the memories she's made with her sisters and everything she has learned from KΔ. "My inner circle, The Big Nine (you know who you are), has a group text going all the time," Evie said. "We always show up for each other at life events. We go to the beach together every year, without fail, and we have traveled the world together." You can connect with Evie at evmauldin@bibank.com.
