Spring 2020 PHI SIGMA KAPPA FRATERNITY AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY Phi Sig Express O n February 20, I met with Purdue Project Manager Kristi Brown about the Third Street closure and how it will impact the Delta Triton Chapter property. The pri- mary concerns are access for food and trash services and utilizing the full alley and parking lot to the house. The only vehicle access to the house parking lot will be via the alley from Fourth Street. Waldron Street in front of the house will be a two-way street with diagonal parking on each side and a 25-foot cul-de-sac at the Third Street intersection. Third Street will have a bike lane and be a total pedestrian mall with new street lights and site ame- nities. Vehicular traffic will be eliminated on Third Street between Martin Jischke Drive and University Street. Purdue had not fully considered some property owner concerns and will work to mitigate some of these issues. Construction will start May 18 and be complete by July 31. Ms. Brown recognizes the restricted access has an impact on property owners but feels the long-term benefit will outweigh the inconvenience. This pedestrian area truly puts Phi Sigma Kappa as a focal point in the major dorm route access to campus. "This is a huge step toward making our campus ever more friendly and creating a better environment for inter- action and impromptu gathering among students and our campus community," Purdue President Mitch Daniels said in a press release on purdue.edu on January 16. "We've heard from students that a project like this is desirable and will make their lives better and their movement around their living spaces more convenient." It has forced on-the-fly changes at home, school, and work to the magnitude of which has not been seen since World War II. In the midst of this life-changing event, Delta Triton Chapter celebrates 90 years at Purdue this fall. We strive for Phi Sigma Kappa to be a campus leader as Purdue returns to classes in August. There is some good news as we stare down this coronavirus. Alumni finances are in good shape. In March, we paid down $83,000 on the mortgage from donor pledges and set aside an additional $40,000 in a reserve fund for future maintenance and repairs. We have the ability to hold our position for a lengthy period, if needed.
