publisher's note I & Mothers and Fathers really admire columnists who have to write a weekly column. They always have to produce new "stuff", which is very hard to do sometimes. Because CityView magazine stays out of the political arena and only publishes positive things about our community, writing a column can become even more difficult. I decided to cover several things this issue because of writers block. This is our May/June issue and the last of our three issues in a row. We publish nine times a year, plus we have a CityView Family, Engage and Cape Fear Valley Medical issue, with all of these being published about the same time. This puts an extra strain on our small staff. So thank you, staff, for your extra effort to make our publications the best they can be. May/June This time of year is welcomed by most people in Fayetteville. The flowers, plants and grass are in full bloom. Weddings are most prominent this time of year, which is why we have dedicated this issue to brides. The Masters and the Dogwood Festival are over and gone for another year. In fact, as I write this the dogwoods in our yard are still in bloom, one week before the festival. Most years the wind has blown the blossoms off the trees by the time the festival arrives. As always to us golf lovers, the Masters was exciting again. Memorial Day We must remember that special day to be so thankful for the military personnel in our great city and the sacrifices that we take for granted they have made for us all. We are blessed as a city and a nation to have such a spectacular military among us. Say a prayer for them to be safe and keep them home with their families in the coming days with all the evil in the world. Mother's Day and Father's Day memories Mother's Day is special time of year to remember and appreciate the mothers who reared us, kept us safe and educated us. My mother died four years ago, but I still appreciate the sacrifices she made when I was growing up. I celebrate this time for my wife, the mother of my two sons, Hughes and Bob. Also, my lovely daughter-in-law, Janet, for the great job she does with my beloved grandchildren. Readers, get your mom some flowers. Although this is routine, mothers still love flowers. My Dad died 10 years ago this year, but Father's Day can be remembered by the U.S. Open golf championship that is always played on that day. He and I shared a love for that event, as does my son Hughes. Speaking of father-son relationships, did you notice the loving embrace of Adam Scott with his Dad after his win at the Masters? That brought a tear to a glass eye. Remember your parents on these two days for all they have done over the years. Have a great summer and God Bless you! 12 | May/June • 2013
