editors' corner Summer Inspiration and Ideas W e all know that a community is only as strong, fun, resourceful and inspiring as its people — Rebekah Sanderlin, senior editor which means that Fayetteville is a very strong, fun, resourceful and inspiring place! This issue of CityView is packed with stories that will make you even prouder to call Fayetteville home. You'll learn about one of the city's best reasons for bragging (Hint: it has nothing to do with the military.) This year the CARE Clinic celebrates 20 years of volunteers providing medical and dental care to the area's working poor. You'll also read about a local woman named Stephanie Kennedy who has turned her own devastating illness into an opportunity to help others. Also in this issue, area restauranteurs share their favorite ways to cook a steak and you'll read about Marcus Alexander, a local fashion plate and entrepreneur who is finding great success designing and selling bow ties. But if those stories don't put a smile on your face, perhaps reading about (and perusing the gorgeous pictures of) the tranquil setting and entertainment and dining available at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden will. We try to share the best our region has to offer in each issue of CityView and you, the people of this city, make our jobs easy. Enjoy! A h, summer. With many special events occurring between May and June, it's time to purchase gifts for Mother's Day, Father's Day, graduates and all those June weddings. In this issue you'll find that the content on weddings and trends in flowers and bridesmaid dresses is balanced out with more manly features, too. You'll envy our home theater man-cave and meet two companies in town that make men's dreams a reality. Of course, you cannot talk about manly topics without mentioning a weapon of some sort. Knives. Males of all ages have collected them over time. In our story, we'll take you inside the workshop of a local knife artisan and learn from start to finish how he fashions raw steel into a custom Tactical Combat Tool. Summer also means trips to the beach. While in Wilmington, I finally carved out time to take a tour of Fort Fisher. History came to life for me thanks to the story telling of tour guide, Ray Flowers. Upon returning home from the family educational beach trip I dug into more research on Col. William Lamb, the Civil War commander. As it turns out, he was the editor for the college newspaper at William and Mary, where his papers, diaries, family photos and heirlooms are maintained. Start your coastal summer trip by first visiting the Wilmington and Beaches Convention and Visitors Bureau website (www.wilmingtonandbeaches.com), where they offer a guide to lodging, sites of interest and local eateries. 10 | May/June • 2013 Kelly Twedell, features editor
