2A – Daily News – Wednesday, June 23, 2010 Community people&events Military — Baluk A year of Mattering One year ago, Fred Null inspired me to start a new series of columns called 'You matter' based on his retirement address to the class of 2009. I have never met Fred Null, I took animal science in high school and our paths have never crossed in the community. I knew he was held in high regard, but the simplicity of his speech and how he spoke out about regular people touched me. Long before Fred Null inspired Photo courtesy of We Shoot Ya Photography Michael Baluk, Red Bluff High School class of 2009, completed basic combat training, AIT (Infantry), and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia in December 2009. I started writing my column after overcoming issues in my life. I had been on the Finding Faydra Tour and had studied suc- cessful people, principles and techniques that helped me and I was compelled to share them. Compelled. When I started writ- ing my columns, I would often times read them in the paper and think "hey, that is pretty good stuff." Not in the arrogant way, but in the teacher is the student kind of way. I felt like the mes- sage was coming through me for my benefit as well as the reader. Sometimes I would be compelled to write about a subject and I would be amazed at how the words would come out effortless- ly. Like a divine intervention. People love the You Matter series. It is a heartwarming way to showcase people in our community. I want to tell you how the series works and you can decide for your- self what it all means. I never write about the obvious person. I do not highlight people who are well known or obvious pillars of our com- munity government or hierarchy. The way that someone is chosen is just like this: God tells me who to write about. It is that simple. Basically, if you have had a column written about you or if you ever do, it is because God wants you to know how much He loves you. words of praise will far outweigh mine. Sometimes I get requests to highlight activities or causes. Again, it is hard because every cause is worthy and the point of the col- umn is to showcase unsuspecting people who would never ask for pub- lic praise. When I encounter some- one or interact or observe them, I get a strong sense from God that they need to be reminded of their value to Him, themselves and the world. He shows me what to say to them and to you to help them inspire you into being, doing and having the things in life that matter. By showing you every day people who do extraordi- nary things in every day life, I hope you see that we all matter in some way. Sometimes I get requests to highlight a person that matters. I used to struggle with this. It never flowed through me the same way when I tried to write about someone on behalf of someone else. If some- one matters to you, tell them. Your Faydra Rector Life Coach This year over 12 peo- ple and one business have mattered. I hope to increase this number this year. I have been com- pelled to write about a couple for the first time and about something in town that many people use all the time. I love writing this column and I believe it is my ministry to write the You Matter series. I am blessed to be a part of such a compassionate and close knit community.
