COMMUNITY NEWS COMMUNITY NEWS Social Services Helping Clients Beat the Heat a STAFF REPORT Due to the anticipated extreme heat this summer, the Cumberland County Department of Social Services is accepting donations of new box fans from civic organizations, churches, businesses and individuals in the community willing to help. Many people in the area cannot afford to operate or do not have air conditioning. Fans are a less expensive way to stay cool. Donated fans will be distributed to those in our community whose income falls below 200 percent of the current poverty level, and who have a family member in the home under the age of 2, over 60 or with a heat-sensitive medical condition. Fans may be dropped off at the DSS building, 1225 Ramsey St., between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Although summer isn’t offi cially here, the extreme temperatures are already with us. The Cumberland County Department of Social Services is offering a measure of relief to people who have no other way to escape the oppressive heat. The DSS offi ce at 1225 Ramsey St. will open an auxiliary lobby this summer when the heat index is expected to rise to the equivalent of more than 100 degrees. (The heat index is comprised of temperature and humidity readings.) Reaching an index of 100 usually triggers a heat advisory. The lobby areas will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the summer when a heat advisory is issued or the heat index reaches 100. Contact the Adult Services Department at 910-677-2388 for more information on fan donation and heat relief. The summer acting troupe is made up of talented high school actors selected through auditions from across the school system. Phoebe Hall, who is the director of Theatre at Fayetteville State University, will serve as the guest director. Hall is well-known for her accomplishments in children’s theatre. The public is invited to attend. To make reservations, please call the box offi ce at 910.308-0592 or e-mail the managing director at robertbaker@ccs.k12.nc.us .
