By Brittany Smith D ecatur's small town charm is evident in every aspect of the city; the local businesses, schools, parks, annual events, and member of the community. Although different in many ways, all of these have one thing in common, they all hold the ideals of the city to provide a wholesome lifestyle and foster growth and development for the flourishing community. Decatur's history goes back to before Arkansas was even a state, due to early settlers of the town who were drawn to a nearby fresh-water spring. e town was soon known for its prosperous crops of strawberries, peaches, and apples. Crop export and production was greatly helped by the addition of the Kansas City Southern Railroad that put a depot in the town, which can still be visited today. Even in its early days, Decatur has always been a town that has provided for its citizens and that tradition continues today with thriving local businesses, both new and established, and an active Chamber of Commerce and residents that all work to make the city a successful and vital part of the area. Places to be and things to do are definitely not in short supply in Decatur. e Decatur Parks and Recreation Department keeps the numerous parks in pristine condition for all your outdoor recreation activities. Book enthusiasts will love the Iva Jane Peek Public Library that is always expanding its already-impressive collection. ere are countless events put on throughout the year that will get you mingling with the community. Celebrate our nation's heroes at the Veteran's Day Parade, enjoy the finest barbecue around at the much-talked about Decatur Barbecue, or get into the holiday spirit at the annual Christmas Parade. e city of Decatur may be small, but its heart is big. Although it has evolved and grown with the times, it has continued to maintain and strive for the same ideals the town's early settlers put in place.
