2A Daily News – Tuesday, April 23, 2013 Community people&events Editor needed for Memories In the 30 years since the Memories began, the Tehama County Genealogical and Historical Soceity publication has maintained its original purpose: to preserve a written record of people, places and events pertaining to Tehama County. This goal has been achieved thorough the work of more than 221 different authors, whose works we have published. However, the 2013 edition may be the last. Alice Jackson is retiring and the society has no editor or stories for the 2014 addition. The annual publication of Tehama County Memories began in 1983 and the first edition contained eight stories and filled a total of 48 pages. It broadly covered the development of the county. Louis Walther of Dairyville served as the first editor and continued in that position for four years. In 1987, Ann McNabb and Margaret Bauer became the co-editors of Memories. In 1999, Carol Mieske and Gene Serr moved to the position of the co-editors. In 2003, Pattie OakleyMcFarlin came on-board as the "final draft" typist, and also served as co-editor. In 2004, Gene Serr moved to the position of sole editor until 2006 when joined by Pattie McFarlin. In 2008 Gene retired as editor. Jackson was selected to replace Serr. In 2007 a committee was appointed to assist in the production of the 2008 Memories, which is the largest edition ever produced with a total of 120 pages. The group welcomes submissions from returning authors and also encourages the public to submit their stories about the history and people of Tehama County Submission may be given to any committee member or mailed to TCGHS, P.O. Box 415, Red Bluff, Ca 96080 ATTN: Memories Committee. Setting it straight There was an error in Saturday's police and fire reports regarding a collision involving Amanda Gilbert, 33, of Los Molinos. She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription medication, but was not booked into Tehama County Jail. She was released to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital for treatment and charges are pending, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman. The Daily News regrets the error. –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. I was an official judge for the rodeo parade. Being a judge was on my bucket list of things to do in Tehama County before I move. You see, my son is a Sophomore and after he graduates, I plan to open myself up to the possibility of living somewhere new. Having lived in Red Bluff nearly all of my life, I have taken for granted many of the traditions we enjoy. When you live in one place for a long time, you can easily forget that some of the activities, places and interesting attractions are unique to this area and can't be experienced just anywhere. I decided this year that I am going to try to find a way to participate in as many activities as I can at an interactive level and create a memory attached to the fun. I started with the rodeo parade and I know I want to be at the author's table this year for the Dairyville Orchard Festival and the list just seems to be growing. If you know of an event or activity to participate in, drop me an email and let me know the details. Being a parade judge is much more work than you would believe. We began before anyone even lined up their float, in the bar at the Elk's Lodge. The pancake breakfast was at full speed by the time we left to do the pre-judging. Barry Recovering From His Injuries In Auto Collision James Barry, a well known stockman from the Cottonwood district, is reported to be improving rapidly from the minor injuries he received Saturday night when the automobile he was driving in the Dairyville section collided headon with a car driven by William Norvell of this city. Barry was badly shaken up and bruised about the head and body, but not seriously hurt. — April 23, 1923 he likes to fix the doors to our pool cage in the open position. The first time he did it, I went ballistic, pointing out the liability: There are children in this neighborhood who could wander in and easily drown in our pool. I said I would leave if he did it again. Yesterday, he did it again. So, I'm thinking he wants me to leave. What recourse do I have when my husband seems mentally fit but begins to exhibit such terrible behaviors? I'm fairly sure he would pass a mental competency test, if I could get him to take one. Is this abuse? Should I find a lawyer? How do I do that? — Sarasota, Fla. Dear Sarasota: This doesn't sound like abuse, but we agree that your husband may not be as mentally competent as he outwardly appears. Does your local police department or neighborhood association issue fines for leaving pool gates open? If so, report your husband and ask them to give him a citation. You also could purchase a new lock to which only you have the key. Then talk to your husband and ask what's going on. If he wants you to leave, you can find a lawyer through your state or county bar association. Dear Annie: "Disgusted" was annoyed with charities that send little gifts to guilt him into sending money. Here are my suggestions: Always check a charity's privacy policy before you donate. Some of the best charities sell their mailing lists. Do not give your name and address if you don't know their privacy policy. If you want to donate, send a money order. They still get the donation, you still get a tax receipt, and you maintain your privacy. Check with Charity Navigator (charitynavigator.org) to find out how much of a charity's money goes toward its purpose as compared to administrative costs. If the charity includes a stamped envelope, fold up every piece of paper they sent, cram it in there and put the following message near your name: "Delete this address from your mailing list. Do not sell, trade, share or otherwise distribute this address with any other mailing list." We spent a lot of time and effort cleaning up my mother-in-law's mail. For every worthwhile charity she donated to, there were about a dozen scummy ones. Good charities are out there, but be cautious. — Mom's Mail Clerk Refresh your body mind and spirit Well-Being Faire & Sidewalk Sale May 11 10-4 Medical, Holistic, and Spiritual Practitioners Vendors-Crafters Downtown Red Bluff Sponsored by the Downtown Business Association
