Pedometer challenge Shasta College teamed with Healthy Shasta to promote a six-week, healthy walking challenge for faculty and staff. The "Beat the President" Pedometer Challenge was a campus wide competition with participants wearing pedometers on loan from Healthy Shasta to record their daily steps for six weeks. On Friday, April 19 from noon to 2 p.m., weather permitting, in the area between the Shasta College Bookstore and Student Center prizes will be awarded to the top contestants with the Top Stepper Overall getting their car washed by Shasta College President, Joe Wyse! This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend. Tracking for the Pedometer Challenge was done via an online, weekly survey with awards going to; 1st place, 2nd place (top average weekday steps/day) and most improved from baseline in each of 3 categories. Bethany Schaarschmidt, Professor of Nutrition at Shasta College, created and managed the event with generous contributions from: Shasta College Foundation; Fleet Feet, Redding; Shasta County YMCA; Healthy Shasta; Shasta Growers Association; Country Organics; Dr. Linda Bacon; and Pat Carlson, MS, RD. In recounting the overwhelming success of the competition Schaarschmidt was elated by the response. "I couldn't believe how many people would walk up to me, pointing at their pedometer with pride in their eyes and tell me how many steps they had done, how much better they felt or how big a difference this was making in their lives," Schaarschmidt said. "I think people were just looking for a nudge in the right direction. "I can't wait for next year's competition." Western heritage. Cattlemen and women. Bigtime rodeo. Old California. PE Club keeps students on the move Courtesy photo Lincoln Street Independent School recently wrapped up their P.E. program with family P.E. at Tehama Family Fitness Center. In addition to teaching students how to warm up and use the equipment at the gym, instructor Kevin Weaver also worked with students on ways to exercise at home without gym equipment. "Our goal with family P.E. is to get kids and their families working together on being active and healthy while also keeping it fun and exciting," said Christi Deveraux. In addition to the work they do at the fitness center, students also have the chance to build skills in specific sports, such as hockey, lacrosse, tennis and volleyball.
