"This Gun for Hire" (1942) Even the posters for this thriller screamed "film noir," with Alan Ladd as a professional killer whose murder of a blackmailer sets a series of complications in motion, some of them involving politics. "Laura" (1944) One of the ultimate examples of film noir, Otto Preminger's lush mystery follows a detective's (Dana Andrews) investigation of a woman's (Gene Tierney) apparent murder. "Murder, My Sweet" (1944) Dick Powell played Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe in one of many screen incarnations of the character – another of which, three decades later, used this story's original title in in "Farewell, My Lovely." "Double Indemnity" (1944) Billy Wilder's legendary take on a James M. Cain story casts Fred MacMurray as an insurance salesman in lethal league with a woman (Barbara Stanwyck) who wants to eliminate her spouse, wit a claims adjuster (Edward G. Robinson) eventually catching onto their plan. "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1946) Another James M. Cain story of illicit lovers – played here by Lana Turner and John Garfield – who wanted to do away with the woman's husband fueled not only this famous version, but also a 1981 remake with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange.
