No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life- threatening problem for adults and children. Food allergy facts: • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • The eight foods or food groups that account for 90% of serious allergic reactions in the U.S. are: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, wheat, soy, peanuts and tree nuts. • Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that the prevalence of food allergies in children increased by 50 percent between 1997 and 2011, and it continues to rise. The CDC estimates that one in 13 children in the United States now has a food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Allergic reactions to food can be different between people, and can also change over time. Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. Avoiding food allergens Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is so important. Manufacturers of foods sold in the United States must state in understandable language whether foods contain any of the top eight most common allergens. This label requirement makes things a little easier. But it's important to remember that "safe" foods could become unsafe if food companies change ingredients, processes, or production locations.
